Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

From my experience, half of those (rough estimate by the names on luggage I see) on that UA route are either going to MNL or SGN/HAN.

That’s encouraging to hear. I’m normally a fearless traveler, however with 48 hours on the ground in Tokyo I’m getting a little tepid. It’s so hard to filter through the news and really get a true sense of what’s going on.

If you don't like their restrictions, they'll give you a refund and you can buy whatever flights you want. Since UA doesn't operate any flights from NRT-PEK, the fact that re-routing is allowed isn't likely to help you.
However, if you recall my situation I was on E and a metal between NRT PEK , and I was given the stopover in NRT and let the PEK legs go. I was even going home PEK ORD IAH EZE . My origin was LAX and my Destiination was actually EZE And now I’m thinking about seeing if I could drop the NRT all together. I’m gonna figure that out next week. Any thoughts?

I am just back from Japan. I am not at all an expert on public health, but I do not think there is much risk in Tokyo or Japan. People are quite conscientious of minimising exposure, and the health system seems vigilant for infections. For the moment, it does seem the virus is mostly contained to mainland China. Maybe some of the SE Asian countries, such as Indonesia or Cambodia, have more risk of undetected exposures.

UA metal won’t get you to BKK, but there are many UA-metal options between US and PEK/PVG/CTU. The agents that I talked to would not let me drop NRT-PEK segment and would not let me keep the original routing with an ANA segment. It is really dependent on the mood of the agent. For example, Flying machine had luck to drop NRT-PEK from his itinerary. But I had no such luck.

Wonder if the SFO-SIN could move 1xdaily vs 2xdaily? The Polaris cabin is more or less 50% full (probably a lot of upgradess) and Econ K class fares are freely available for good prices.

I have suspended my travel to China until end of March and monitor the situation to determine future travel plans.

I have been working out of Singapore/Malaysia this week and will move to Australia this weekEnd as a precaution as Singapore has seen the number of cases escalated. I was at the Sentosa Resort World earlier this week for a dinner, and it was pretty much a ghost town. Absolutely eerie feeling!

That is not my observation. It seems most of the people on 871/872 start/stop in TPE.

UA would have routed paying MNL and SGN passeners through NH as there is a joint venture agreement with NH.

Yes, EVA started a late night bank out of TPE to some Southeast Asian cities (and redeye back to TPE) which would connect with 871/872. However, BR had (now suspended due to the virus) flights to SFO and LAX at similar times as UA 871/872 to keep those passengers on BR. BR's TPAC, however, are at least 1/3 transit passengers.

The ban is now lifted. Again, probably like Italy, some bureaucrat in MNL applied the "One China Policy" in this case when they barred Mainland China. Taiwan does have some influence in the Philippines so it got reversed. A lot of the damages are already done though.

Taiwan was really blessed in this. Because of the DPP government's Anti-China policy the last few years, visitors from Mainland has dropped drastically. Otherwise, it would probably have been affected more than Japan, Singapore and Korea. (I am not saying whether the policy is good or bad as that is a huge debate - just that it worked out this time.)

(I posted earlier and the wiki also needs to be updated...They revised the 'originally purchased by' date to Feb 12th.)
Yeah this is annoying. The last waiver let us rebook online which was great.

I find it odd that the waiver covering Wuhan - which is the center of the coronavirus outbreak - has a waiver only through the end of March, while HK and the mainland China destinations UA serves directly are through the end of April.

I did want to get some clarification, since there seem to be a lot of dates floating around. If I have a paid Y+ upgrade on a PVG-EWR award ticket on Sunday, April 26 (standard award), can I get a refund if I cancel the trip? The website suggests that this is the case, but given it's not a paid ticket, I wasn't sure if there is a separate process.

Please don't give them tips. I got one of the rare upgrades on UA28 on the 29th of April.

United has data and does not need idea or tips. I am sure that United has a model to forecast the demand, too. Now, it is just waiting-and-see before announcing any decision.

If you see useful info, sure. If it requires fare increase but all UA metal, likely UA waiver would work. If it requires fare increase on OAL, likely UA waiver won't work

If you don't(UA engine isn't good at handling/searching for flight changes options) , too bad
Unfortunately the online change option doesn't work with these flights. It immediately says you have to call in to change the itinerary.

UA does not fly to Wuhan / WUH and any UA connecting flights are covered in the other waivers / suspension. Simply no need for a Wuhan waiver from a UA perspective.
