Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

My biggest concern about this is the elevated potential of getting quarantined somewhere that is not home for an extended period.

Australia (DFAT) just raised their travel alerts for Japan and South Korea. Only from 1 to 2 (there are 4 levels).

I am not concerned about Japan as not flying there until August, but am concerned by the Northern Italian outbreak. I am in the 55+ demographic. I am not going to Italy but England next month. And I had not been concerned but the doubt is starting to creep in....I do not believe the virus has been contained despite the WHO announcements.

As with SARS, this thing will stay with us for a while, and obviously it won't be over by summer. But it should be noted again that it could be much worse. The vast majority of healthy adults that don't delay treatment survive the infection. While a vaccine takes a while to develop, early recognition of infection and medical treatment of cases should become more optimized over the next few weeks, which will further reduce the number of deaths. There's currently a lot of overreaction, which is fine and completely normal in this stage, but I expect things to settle down before the summer.

I am much more pessimistic about the long term. I wish that lessons would be learned, that the first country involved would make changes so viral transmission from animal to human becomes much more difficult, that industries would diversify their manufacturing and sourcing instead of relying on one country, and that medical supplies preventing infection are stockpiled in abundance, as the next coronavirus could very well be much more contagious and much more deadly than Covid-19. But I have no reason to believe anything will fundamentally change.

Same here. I'm no more worried abt my health WRT this virus than influenza, but definitely worried abt quarantine or travel ban or border closure.

Same here. I'm not going to Asia again until the end of September, but I'm flying to LHR and then on to ZRH next week. And Switzerland borders Northern Italy. I do not want to get stuck in Europe, lovely as that sounds (under better circumstances).

I just called in to change a TPE/SIN ticket to a simple domestic one-way. The reason I called is because it couldn't be changed online. They waived the change fee without asking and they even refunded the fare difference to original form of payment instead of etc (again, didn't ask for it). Change fee would have been $120, maybe that's why it was so easy.

If I read the news correctly, Japan is going to quarantine the whole plane if one of the passengers is diagnosed. I wonder how UA will manage this situation.

Flying to NRT 28 March !! 🥺

Flying EWR-NRT-MNL-NRT-EWR leaving on 28 March returning 12 April. planning to spend a week in Tokyo before heading to see family in Manila. Hope they wont start banning travel to Japan now....or worse banning entry to Philippines.Already had my return changed to transit via NRT instead of HKG.

the good thing is I’m waitlisted for polaris on 79 heading to NRT so hopefully that clears (if they don’t cancel the HND flight)

I see UA has added ICN to the waiver as well now on the UA waiver page same dates as the HKG ones... This continues to grow

SIN-SFO (UA28) last week had Y was almost full and J was 46/48.
Airport was quiet but things were normal. I wouldn't hesitate to get back there but I'm not in the high risk group.

Interesting that I got to see the Jewel at the complete opposites: last year I was there the week it opened (huge crowds) and now possibly the quietest it gets.

Would you mind clarifying what you were able to do? Did you have a USA - domestic flight - SFO - TPE ticket that you changed to just domestic flight? And then did you get a refund of the fare difference? Thanks.

I note there is now a ICN travel waiver, but not TPE or SIN (yet).

I have a EWR-NRT-ICN flight next week. I'm fine with flying EWR-NRT (and then to elsewhere from NRT). Is it worth calling about NRT-ICN since waiver doesn't include refund on unused portion, or should I just no-show for that last segment?
