Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus Premier members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through Uniteds award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

Of course, this assumes that your meeting is rescheduled rather than cancelled entirely.
I'm on UA 803 next Thursday and looking at J through the week. I'm seeing 25+ empty seats all week long. I know this is a low time of year but mid-week is practically empty.

I'd imagine this is just the beginning and Tokyo frequencies may start to fall as we get into March?

Especially if the Covid-19 numbers get worse in Japan - things don't look too good there.

I wonder if overall travel bookings are impacted. I was able to book a summertime Europe flight with a P fare on the way over (Thursday night) - cost me less than $400 more than economy for the outbound. Seems like a steal to me given it is peak season...

Definitely. Saying it is only a China thing is myopic.

I too noticed this price compression for certain dates to Europe. I am thinking of canceling XY and buying P (and flushing the miles via Choices). Net $1-$1.2k RT in Polaris is pretty sweet.

UA agent said no waiver and no refund, so I will plead with 1Kvoice to see if anything can be done, based on the Unplanned Event rules. Doubtful...

My Company has also banned travel to the region Korea through Singapore, including personal travel - so I added this to the request with documentation.

If not will cancel at last minute and wait and see if UA makes changes/cancels or same with NH as we connect through Tokyo.
Hopefully 1KVoice at least let you re-use the money - and give you an extension to use it. We have not seen the worst of this yet and things will probably get worse in Japan and Singapore so rules will probably change again.

Italy having a substantial pickup in cases as well. I just booked a trip out there in August...I sure hope it's gone by the summer. Yikes.

If this thing is not under control by the summer (i.e. keeps spreading, no vaccine, no cure), then I think our problem would be a lot bigger than any particular trip we will be making.

The daily WHO Situation Reports show that 96% of the issue is in Hubei province. The number of cases in other countries are still very small relative to any other risk in traveling. At the rate this is going, I don't expect United waivers to be expanded anytime soon to other countries, nor am I worried about traveling either. I suggest monitoring the situation reports, and not the sensational media.

Have you seen what's going on in the last few days?
Japan- having a mess with the cruise ship.
South Korea situation significantly expanding, raised infectious disease threat to highest level today
Iran- deaths up
Italy- more deaths, Milan and Venice taking extreme measures, carnival in Venice cancelled
Israel- 14 infected South Korean's visited, they are putting folks who had contact with them in isolation, Korean Airlines passengers refused entry to country and other measures..

Take a look at seatmaps/ flight info for United flights to Singapore/Japan/Korea for the next few days, nobody is going there. Waivers or not, Asia is basically being isolated and events are unfolding quickly.

When HIV/AIDS first started, it was classified as the gay disease. I think we Covid-19 is no longer a China disease and we should be aware no matter where we are. I added / updated some links in the Wiki to reflect that.

Can confirm having flown UA1/2 in the past few days. Plenty of open seats. Lots of NRSA getting upgraded to Business. Wonder when one of the SIN flights is going to be cancelled?

The mood in SIN was one of resignation. No one quite knows how and when this is going to end.

It does look like about 75 people today on UA1 with 13/48 seats booked in J, 22 tomorrow. I can't see how they continue to operate all these flights with those types of loads.

Right now, UA's waivers cover Mainland China and HKG while CDC's advisories levels are: Warning - Mainland China, Alert - Korea and Japan, Watch - Hong Kong. So, something is "crossed".

At the end of the day, it is your health and health of those around you. Each one of us has different risk tolerance. So, look at the numbers, the distribution, the growth (https://www.worldometers.info/corona...s/#daily-cases), the situation and decide for yourself.

The latest news out of Italy (third highest infection rate worldwide as of today) is less than encouraging and could affect TATL travel at a higher rate as well.
