Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

I am pretty shell-shocked by this whole situation. Hawaii is just beginning the curve so they will be dealing with this for weeks or months to come.

If United would just give you 6, 9 or 12 months from the date of travel to use the ticket, I would be OK.
Are you sure you need to commence travel by then? I have some flights that I originally booked last summer that I called and rebooked for late October and early November. No issues. I was under the impression that the BOOKING needs to happen within the year, not the actual flight.

Sorry if this has been answered, but for tickets purchased between Mar 2, 2020 and Mar 31, 2020, is the change fee waived only for the first change or for as many changes as you like up to a year?

The T&C didn't seem that clear to me, and I know some other carriers (LH?) are only waiving the fee for the first change.

Beleive each new ticket will have its own fare rules.

It depends.

In most cases, making a change will require re-faring the ticket at then-current prices and rules. Therefore, you can make as many changes as you want within the promo period -- currently through March 31, but it may be extended -- and you will not lose the ability to make an additional change after the promotion ends. However, most changes made after the promo period ends will result in new rules taking effect, which likely mean a change fee for any subsequent change. There may be exceptions for round-trip or multi-city tickets where you're not changing the outbound, and UA could always write an ongoing waiver into the rules for March 2-31 purchases, but in general, I'd assume that you get one free change after the promotion expires. Anything beyond that would be a pleasant surprise.

Note that if your new flight is less expensive than your old flight, the excess value is ignored -- UA keeps it, and the new ticket is treated as though you'd only paid the lower amount to begin with.

Thanks - I was aware of the "losing the difference if new fare is lower" catch - but I couldn't find clarity about this multiple change question I had.

Just got a re-route message this morning that our [insert weren't going anyway] April 11 flight RNO-SFO-OGG flight has been re-routed RNO-DEN-OGG.

Seems like a pretty weird re-route. Maybe they're standing down on RNO-SFO flights that day (or at least the early ones). CONFIRMED the early flights are not operating.

As of now that DEN-OGG flight is packed so that would make the decision not to go that much easier anyway.

It would be easier to drive to SFO from Tahoe anyway. Wouldn't go to Denver just to overfly Tahoe on the way back to SFO.

From 27 March 2020 message from Oscar / Scott -- full text in https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unit...l#post32239210

The global economy has taken a big hit, and we don't expect travel demand to snap back for some time. Our April schedule is already cut by more than 60% and we expect our load factors to fall into the teens or single digits even with 60% less capacity. We are currently planning to make even deeper cuts in May and June.

In my past 3 years experience TPA-CLE/CLE-TPA only runs during spring break time. It is not available my June and Sept/Oct travels.

Shortest and most economical route is layover @ IAD. It's bearable. 😊

My international flight in May is still on (won't be soon)... It's interesting my mile re-deposit charge (no status) has gone from $125 to $75 to $50. Won't touch it until it's canceled.

I'm not sure where to ask this so I'm plonking it here.

I found dirt cheap tickets LON-LAX for christmas time travel which, I really want to book. If I book now will I be able to change the ticket to a date in the future if travel is unable to go ahead? I would be booking with a OTA. Fare is less than £1k for 3 tix so if I end up eating it, it's not going to cause too many issues.

Thanks in advance.

I don’t know the answer to your question specifically (what does UA website currently say?) but I would strongly advise against booking with an OTA.

Looking for some advice. I am mightily confused.

I have 2 RT tickets CLE-ORD-MUC flying out 5/1 and returning 5/11. They were booked in BF (Z fare) and have already been rescheduled by UA to CLE-EWR-MUC (I have not approved the change, just was sent an email by UA. )
I will not need the flight (cruise will be axed in the next week)

Do I have to make a change to the tickets before 3/31 to maintain their value? To be honest, I snagged a deal and I doubt that any future BF fare will be less than what I paid for these tickets. Therefore, making a change to a later date (say Fall, 20 or Winter '20-21) will be less money and I will not lose "residual". However, I have no plans for that period of time.

If I wait until April and need to cancel, am I going to be charged a cancellation fee? Finally, can I technically argue that UA changed my original routing without my consent (from ORD to EWR) and insist on, at a minimum, a voucher for the value of the flight?

As I said, I am really up in the air (pun intended ) as to what to do.

If I need to get a ticket refunded that departs in May but has a June return date, along with partner flights - do folks think UA will allow the waiver to cover the entire itinerary? Everything is on one PNR.

While I cannot speak for refunds, I am booked on a flight departing on 5/22 and returning on 6/1 to Europe. When I called they said that I would get a credit for the full amount of the trip if I cancel, even though the return is in June.
