Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

Fortunately, UA made a schedule change for the SFO-FRA in July (the more expensive trip) and I got a refund. Still, limbo for September because the flights are still on the schedule but not presently bookable.
My biggest issue will be the inbound connection from LHR to GVA, on Swiss. If cancelled, I can get there via Eurostar or alternate flights to CDG or LYS. The return is easier; I can manage BSL, GVA, LYS & CDG equally well. I haven't flown the past 15 years without having backup itins in place anyway, so this isn't really anything new to me. Just might finally be put to good use!

My guess is that it's impossible to get a read on how things are going to be, more than 60 days out, and even then it's a educated guess. Emphasis on guess.

Thinking about a new booking for December travel to Germany... would I be right that LH's rebooking policy is more flexible than UA's for a booking made right now?

If I understand them correctly, if I book a flight today (June 14) and later decide not to take the trip
  • UA: Permitted to change free of charge to a flight of equal or lesser value, for travel up to June 14, 2021.
  • LH: One-time rebooking free of charge, for travel up to December 31, 2021.
Since UA's MP changes have made it pointless for me to pursue status, I would book through LH instead of UA for the extra flexibility - but let me know if I'm missing something.

The official policy slightly favors LH. (Note that the equal-or-lesser value thing is pretty much a wash: LH is also going to be asking for a fare difference, if applicable). However, if you are US-based, I would argue that the practical policy strongly favors UA. Although they could change it at any time, the fact is that UA is currently allowing people to change to an ETC at no cost, allowing you to bypass both the travel date restriction and the residual value ignored policy. Furthermore, if you found yourself needing to take a trip just to use the credit, with UA you have the possibility of using the ticket for domestic travel, which may not be possible on an LH ticket. Finally, if things are still bad enough in December, to the point where you wouldn't want to take the trip, I suspect that airlines will have extended their change policies accordingly. (Also: UA finally seems to have stopped fighting refunds due to schedule changes; LH, as nearly as I can tell, has not).

Thanks for the insight jsloan - but I'm not sure I follow the ETC point. For new bookings, UA's ETC policy doesn't seem to bypass the date restriction:

If the customer decides to cancel the flight they booked between April 1, 2020, and June 30, 2020, they can retain the value of the ticket to be applied to a new ticket without fee for travel up to 12 months from the original ticket issue date.
The ETC limitation to UA metal can be a pain as well. I'd like to use an existing ETC for this flight (SFO-MUC and INN-FRA-SFO), but the Austrian segment forecloses use of the ETC.

The published policy doesn't allow for an ETC, but rather future flight credit (FFC). However, there is currently an unpublished policy that allows for an ETC instead. ETCs are currently good for purchases of anything that's on the schedule for two years from the date of issue. So, an ETC issued July 1, 2020 can be used until July 1, 2022, for travel through about June 1, 2023. Even if they go back to the pre-COVID validity of one year to make a purchase, that's still longer than LH's rebooking option.

The inability to book on partner airlines with an ETC is definitely a potential concern, however; if your only possible trips are TATL, then I suppose LH might be a better option for that reason.

Additional trans-Atlantic flying from New York/Newark (EWR), Washington-Dulles (IAD) and San Francisco (SFO), including resumption of service to Brussels (BRU), Dublin (DUB), Munich (MUC), and Zurich (ZRH)
I also see that VS is resuming some US-UK flights July 20th. So my question is with these additional flights would it be reasonable to assume that UA and other airlines have some knowledge that EU will be opening to US citizens or are they just guessing as to what may happen? I really want to book some trips to the EU for the coming months but it's just too uncertain if they will be open for US tourists.

Ah, I just got reminded that airlines are scheduling phantom flights to collect money from unsuspecting people. Guess time will tell!

Seems like you can still get where you want to go. I'm surprised that the connecting flights in the EU run as often as they do; that's what worries me a bit. Lots of room for cancellations there.
The pre-Covid schedule was 2x daily SFO-LHR and 2x daily SFO-FRA, each with a noon and a 7pm departure.

Since a US citizen can’t enter Canada earlier than end of July, and we have UA flight there in mid July, should we be entitled to a full refund? So confusing..thanks

No, if the flight operates per schedule. Meeting entry requirements is the passenger's responsibility. You will be able to get FFC or ETC and reschedule for free.

Your best hope for a refund is a greater than 2 hour change in schedule.

Thanks, just hopeful. They changed aircraft and we specifically chose a flight not on a regional jet, which the flight from Houston to Calgary is now on. I have been confused as to which credit is more beneficial to choose- and FFC or ETC. Thanks again!

I just looked more closely and the Houston to Calgary segment has disappeared from their website so hoping to be able to get a refund for itinerary.

Call and ask. It may take talking to a supervisor. Mention that you realize it is your responsibility to satisfy entry requirements, but you could hardly have known such would become so draconian. A supervisor may be sympathetic.

RNE, emphasizing that exceptions do occur; I recently received one.

Has it disappeared from your itinary or is not offered for sale?

The first is more promising.

Not offered for sale is not the same as cancelled in some cases.
