Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

This policy change will automatically appear, but it may not be reflected everywhere right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.

My initial tickets were pure United stock. Only LH flight or metal on the reissue is FRA-EDI.

PNS - direct available from IAH, IAD, ORD and DEN
VPS - direct available from IAH (x2), ORD and DEN
ECP - direct available from IAH (x3), IAD, ORD and DEN
None of the Big Four see NYC-FL Panhandle as a good O&D route; even during normal times, the closest you get is American non-stops into Philadelphia. Allegiant has the lone VPS-Newark non-stop route, which is rather a sign that it's not a route a major carrier would be interested in. Panhandle-Washington DC can actually pick up a decent amount of Department of Defense flyers, who seem to have come back sooner than private business flyers. (Parking lot at VPS has been 80-90% full since last fall so only moderately down from 2019 when they were turning what had been employee parking into a long term lot)

DEN- Frontier has made DEN-PNS work well enough that I guess United figured it was worth a try for that kind of route and it's nice for folks originating in Florida to be able to avoid double connections in many cases now.

There are some retrofitted 789 with Polaris cabin/seats.

ty97 is on the mark here. All NYC airports have been slow to recover, and they will continue to lag behind other airports across the US (with the exception of SFO, having also experienced slow recovery).

In terms of UA hubs, here is my observation of recovery process:

Way ahead group: Denver

Fast recovery: Houston

Making some headways: Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C.

Way behind: New York/Newark, San Francisco

Also, UA's super dominant position at EWR is no more. I recall not long ago, United had over 75% share at EWR, but it's now down to under 63% with the (latest) December 2020 report (attached - published yesterday, April 14, 2021). B6 (JetBlue) is making a strong play, and will be further boosted with the upcoming move to the new T1 (under construction) at EWR.

I have EF alerts but 789 with Polaris is not something I'll be betting on, it's like 1/3 of them with the seats IIRC. Thankfully I can just make a decision in the days prior.

I'm not surprised that EWR is down so much still since it is UA's primary TATL hub and TATL is next to nonexistent currently. I am surprised though that the NYC airports (all of them, for all airlines) haven't started to pick up a bit more now that NY stopped requiring quarantine for travelers. We'll see what future months bring I guess. (And we'll see when airlines are required to start using their LGA/JFK slots again, but that's probably no time soon).

Fair enough - but I'm surprised they've done 2 HNL-DEN red-eyes only 1 hour apart - I'd think they could do a morning flight to get late afternoon/early evening connections for people that are red-eye adverse - a 7am would get folks in roughly 5:30pm

The key factor is the demographic of would be passenger in places like NYC and SF. Also, without the support of INTL flights, NYC and SF are more O&D than hubs like IAH or DEN with lots of connecting passengers.

LAX-LHR off the schedule (again)?

As of today, a few dates in August (that appeared yesterday) seem to be no longer operating LAX-LHR-LAX. I didn't do an exhaustive search. Any insights?

Looks like another schedule change in progress. We had one on Wednesday night (two days ago) that seems to finalize June (through June 30). Now I have a schedule change for July 2 in tonight's update.

What is UA’s summer schedule relative to AA?

AA is going to to fly more than 90% of its domestic seat capacity compared to summer 2019 and 80% of its international seat capacity compared to 2019. Has UA finalized its summer schedule yet?

My June 4 EWR-ATH flight was just canceled. EF shows however that from June 3-10, it’s only the Friday flight that was dropped. I switched to Saturday for now. Still holding out hope that it sticks, as Greece seems to be intent on reopening.

Greece is opening right now for EU-citizens, but I doubt the EU (Schengen) will open to US-tourists . The same problem for me the other way. (USA open for EU-tourists)

Indeed, more changes last night. Good riddance UA. I get these are not easy times, but the frequency of changes and resulting messed up reservations are not helpful.

not true. Greece has announced opening to US citizens next week. Not sure how that’s possible with Schengen rules but.
