Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes
UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.
20 Oct 2021
However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.
Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)
UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees "Are Gone For Good"(Worldwide ex-USA,non-BE),waiver til March2021 for all
Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.
United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.
The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.
Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.
The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

What timing. I booked a July itinerary this morning and already have a schedule change on it. I expected it, just not so quickly!

I'm reading what appears to be some conflicting info in this thread and would appreciate the sages of FT's help.
For most of COVID and certainly the last 6+ months, scheduled beyond 45 days or so were merely placeholders. Then the last few days I've been reading multiple reports of schedule changes in July and August. Does that mean the schedules thru that period are actually "real"? Specifically, I'm flying 7-18 June and wondering if those dates are locked in or not? I'm very interested in the ORD-KOA flight on 18 June. Being a new route that feels far more at risk to me. Thoughts? TYIA.

While it was true that in recent history UA has been adjusting most schedules just 4-8 weeks in advance, but it wasn't unknown for UA to adjust some schedules each month for as much as 3-4 months -- not many but there was some from time to time.
Is that what's happening here or is more than just a few being done further out, I think we don't have enough data to say
Again I would be careful drawing such a conclusion. UA may cautiously adjusting more schedules farther out but I doubt UA will go from 99% short-term scheduling to 100% longer-term schedule all at once. You should have a better idea in 3 weeks.

I would be careful drawing that conclusion based on limited data.

United was nice enough to swap an upcoming flight from a CRJ-200 to an ERJ-145. I guess these schedule changes aren't all bad.

I had a schedule change for flights in August. My EWR-MCO flight was changed from a 752 at 9:45am to a 739 at 9:30am. A 752 flight was added at 10:35am (I don't know what was there before, but it wasn't that). Returning the last flight MCO-EWR was cut back from 8:55pm too 7:00pm. While I expect another change closer to departure, I was surprised to see that they are even thinking that far in advance right now.

Got hit with July changes in which no IAH to south Texas flights later than 9pm departure. That kills any connection for the once a day carribbean flights into IAH. UA can't sell me PUJ to MFE without an overnight M-Th. Why make this move and at peak summer dates??? I already sent in a comment but if they stick with this schedule can I get a full refund and not just travel credit?

Best I can tell, seems like they keep removing the EWR-SNA nonstop from the placeholder schedule as it gets closer in. As of now, I'm booked on this route nonstop first week of June. Any guesses as to whether they'll run these flights?

Maybe? Isn't CA (possibly) lifting restrictions as of June 15?

I sure hope they run it! I don't wanna have to game out whether I'd rather make a connection to SNA, or take the 405 from LAX to the OC...

I'll give you a guess on 1 May 2021 when UA is likely to have published the June updated.

I was thinking to taking that flight and didn't book it because my gut feel is that it will be cut when they update the June schedule. For your sake, I hope I am wrong!

This is totally anecdotal but I could absolutely see the UA bean counters getting very excited about the margin they can command in this first wave of post-vax America. I work in financial services and we've had several of our New York counterparts that we haven't met with since Q1 of last year give us the "as long as you can prove your vaccinated, we're happy to host you in our offices" just in the last few weeks. There is for sure going to be a gap period here before any of the majors bring back more frequency but where demand is through the roof. Have my first onsite trip booked for 5/6-7 where I had the pleasure of paying $350 for an outbound OW ORD>EWR D fare and $1,200 for a return OW J fare EWR > ORD. With basically 3 flights a day ex-EWR & LGA it was literally my only option for the forward cabin that works with my schedule. 3 J inventory seats left on that 737 with coach basically full already.
Should be a fun summer.
