Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Always crosscheck with UA's Travel Notices , Coronavirus (COVID-19) travel waivers and information, www.united.com/coronavirus as the situation is dynamic

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

Strange thing this time, HKG is only cut for first half of May, now “resumes” Saturday May 15.

That’s because the schedule has only been updated till May 14, not the entire month.

my take is HKG and many other TPACs are a "rolling cancel" until those Asian destinations are relaxing restrictions / opening up. Unless cargo demand justifies otherwise.

From today's (3/31) WSJ: "In May, United will be about 55% of the size it was in May 2019 in terms of capacity, he says. June and July will be much bigger, but still below 2019 levels. Those schedules will be loaded “in a few weeks,” he says (Ankit Gupta, United’s vice president of domestic network planning and scheduling.

CNBC reported earlier this week that AA was seeing booking levels at 90% of pre-Covid levels, with similar fleet capacity numbers. That clearly means significant fare increases. If you haven't booked domestic travel already, prepare for significant fare increases and limited scheduling options.

Too late for the DOM routes I want to fly in the next few weeks. I am going to have to modify my buying timeframe which is currently no more than 7 days out!

Just in time to screw up my travels for the second time in May.......frustrating. They couldn't have done ALL of May at once, let's do it in two stages and mess up people with early and late May travel.

How can we make reliable plans for June? I guess the answer is we can't. It's time for them to set June through August schedules and stick with them. Very frustrated here.

Looks like June updates are coming through as well. Ugh. I am unable to change my flights, the website crashes when I try to change seats and de novo searches are showing 'The seat map for this flight is currently unavailable. Please try again later' for 6/5 SFO-BOS.
That'll be fun tomorrow to sort out this mess.

Seems like the latest schedule update goes out to 6/2 inclusive.

UA remains uninterested in serving transcon routes with any semblance of a competitive offer. LAX-EWR has been 1x 781 and 2x 752 for a couple months now (was 2x 781 1x 752 over the winter), and the J cabins are selling out, especially on the 752s. LAX/SFO-JFK are at 10x weekly; on the days without the second flight, the one flight is poorly timed for west coast travelers. SFO-BOS is at 4x or 5x weekly on a 737, and there's still no sign of LAX-BOS, SFO-PHL, etc. coming back. LAX-IAD is similarly relegated to 737s (compared to a 788 on one frequency last summer). I understand that the widebody fleet is somewhat tight these days with the PW 772s grounded, but this lack of capacity, and to a lesser extent lack of flat beds up front, is increasingly uncompetitive.

Between the pathetic timetable, comparatively high prices (partly due to insufficient capacity), and poor onboard product, there is very little holding me to UA domestically (most of my domestic travel is transcon these days). Until UA gives me a good reason to start paying for J, I have/will only fly UA when I can exhaust some of my PlusPoints on a $100 one-way coach fare; otherwise I'm looking to buy J elsewhere (AA/B6/DL). B6 is the clear winner product-wise, but they are often priced substantially above AA/DL, especially to NYC and BOS. Between AA and DL, it's a tossup between guaranteed 1-2-1 seating (on all LAX-JFK flights at least) but no service on DL, or 2-2 seating with relatively decent meal service on AA.

My May travels just got smacked around

- MSP-IAD-RDU. The latest routing home from MSP on a Saturday is now at 1:15 PM instead of the 5:30 PM I had booked
- IAD-RDU. United keeps teasing us with a return of the 8:30 AM IAD-RDU nonstop and claiming it'll be on a 738. I booked yesterday and within hours it had reverted to the COVID schedule wherein the first flight is now at 10:50 AM and on an E75. I also lost E+ seats for my family and had to get those back.

United, you are not making it easy.

Yep, HKG now "resumes" 6/03, with 869 arriving at 6/04 1845. Would've been perfect timing for the annual Victoria Park candlelight vigil at 2000. Needless to say even if this flight happens, nobody can leave the airport immediately and there'll be no legal or illegal gathering allowed.

And EWR-KEF resumes 6/03. Was this date the originally planned date?
