Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Always crosscheck with UA's Travel Notices , Coronavirus (COVID-19) travel waivers and information, www.united.com/coronavirus as the situation is dynamic

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

This policy change will automatically appear, but it may not be reflected everywhere right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.

I'm used to DL which pushes through schedule updates every Saturday (which usually begin on Saturday early morning and can continue throughout the day on Saturday and occasionally into Sunday) but unsure if there's a specific day/time of the week I should check for any potential schedule updates to my itineraries.

For the most part, updates are done on Wednesdays and Fridays. They usually start around 5:30PM US Central (Chicago/Houston) time. It takes several hours, as by the time I go to bed around midnight (ET), most of the flight times and aircraft are uploaded, but I usually can't get to a seat map until sometime the next morning.

I have had changes come through Monday night into Tuesday, as well. Also, if you have LH segments, they have been doing their updates on Wednesdays.

Minor tweaks to December tonight!

Had my 3rd or 4th schedule change to one itinerary since I booked it months ago.

Had an 8am IAH-DTW that got cancelled, now on a 12pm flight for end of November. Would have been nice to have gotten a notification!

But maybe I can make a nice change without paying thanksgiving airfare prices for this.

EDIT: that worked out really nicely for me. Had several prime-time thanksgiving weekend return flights available for no cost.

FWIW, saw that my 763 flights over the year-end holidays were updated to the Polaris seat map, which coincides with a post I saw on another thread saying the last aircraft with the old seats was moved into storage. Imagine it will turn into a bit of a mess on day-of travel with folks trying to play seat roulette given the flight was already booked full in Polaris with what I imagine are many couples/families traveling for the holidays.

Lots and lots of schedule changes for me tonight through March 1st.

Had SFO-BOS January changes. LAX-ITO now 2+ hours later (will see if they allow to KOA instead) as well as HNL-LAX late February changes as well.

That'll take some time to sort out. Ugh.

Major cuts going on right now, not sure if it’s permanent, but as of Jan 4th, several smaller Midwest markets are completely off the schedule.

A thread below discusses COU-Columbia, MO and a news article confirming the Jan 4th end date. Tonight they removed all future flights after Jan 4th to:

LAN-Lansing, MI
AZO-Kalamazoo, MI
CWA-Central Wisconsin/Wausau
EVV-Evansville, IN

…There may be others, these are just some of the markets I thought of to spot check, triggered by a LAN search (which is surprising to me, they had all 76-seaters in October and a E175/CRJ rotation through Jan 3, but also dropped
December to 1X daily tonight as well). Luckily, my airport was spared, as was nearby FNT, but back to CR2 service for Jan 4th onward, which seems to be more common now for lots of smaller cities that had -550 and/or E175 service. Kind of scary overall for those of us not at/near a hub or major city.

Not sure if this warrants its own thread like what was started for COU yesterday.

Dow traffic should be enough to keep MBS on the schedule.

I sure hope so! I ride their coattails as a business traveler without any ties to them or their affiliates. …But those 2 CRJ-900s private shuttles they they fly around the country daily don’t help the commercial side though.

And MBS is one of the top 5 most expensive airports for passenger fares in the country…I’ve always heard it’s actually quite profitable for DL and UA, despite not always stellar passenger counts.

Speaking of the popular US-NRT-BKK option, what is going on with EWR-NRT in January? It seems that Jan 4-22, the EWR-NRT flight is happy to sell business class fares (it is often Z9 P9) but it is consistently Y0, with the seat map showing every seat open in coach.

Is this a sign that they're not confident they'll fly it? Or do I need to be patient and they'll start selling those coach seats sometime?

I asked the same question in another thread. It's the same for flights from IAH, LAX, and SFO. All fare classes were available (except PZ of course) until a few days ago and now they're just selling a few business seats. I take it as uncertainty whether they will fly or not.

Is this specific to NRT or is the situation similar with HND flights, too?

I got hit this weekend too. I have (had) LIH-HNL-SFO/SFO-CMH with an overnight layover at SFO. My legs from Hawaii were mostly unaffected (only a 6 minute adjustment on the HNL-SFO leg) but my SFO-CMH nonstop got axed and now I have SFO-ORD-CMH. I got auto-rebooked on what would probably be the best option time-wise based on my preferences but still kinda bummed since I was really happy with getting both the overnight layover at SFO and yet still getting into CMH before dinner time. Now with the added stop, I have a much later arrival into CMH.

This was booked as a multi-city on one ticket. While I didn't book it initially because of being able to both avoid the redeye and still get a decent arrival time into CMH, I wonder if UA would just rebook it as LIH-HNL-ORD/IAD/IAH/EWR-CMH and I'll just take the redeye I initially was looking to avoid.

they probably would book it if you request it. Agents have been pretty flexible with these things, at least with me.

I had SJC-DEN-YYZ in Oct. and DEN-YYZ got canceled (route restart delayed). I was auto-rebooked SJC-DEN-ORD-YYZ, and system was showing a waiver that required same airports and UA/UAX only - so couldn’t get what I wanted online. I could have asked them to rebook with DEN-YYZ on AC, instead I asked if they would book me on SFO-ORD-YYZ on the prime 7am flight (which was double the cost of the flight I had out of SJC). They did, no questions asked, rebooked into W (from G or K, can’t rememeber) and somehow posted with about 30% more PQP then I should have had (shhhhh!)

Also, don’t think booking as a multi-city vs. a one way or round-trip functionally changes anything once it is actually booked.
