Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

Argh... IAD to DFW goes to one flight a day (end of May) from three.... I was expecting a reduction but hoping that the one that stuck would be mine (noon-ish).

I noticed today. I am pretty sure I had checked the reservation earlier this week (maybe Monday or Tuesday) and it was still good. I am not sure why I checked today but it went from a non-stop to a cnx through IAH.

Actually the 789 scheduled is a surprise; I do not recall such a large plane on this route before. Could be cargo-related.

It is showing a 763 for my June, September and December EWR-ZRH flights. We'll see once they update the schedule. Either the 763 or the 789 will be nice

UA reinstated this flight recently and now seems to have abandoned it again; can anyone please provide more information? The 3 times that I have taken this flight, the plane has been 100% full. Thanks.

No one here can give a definitive answer, but such flights are sometimes seasonal and UA may have felt there are better uses of the aircraft as we enter the summer travel period. It appears to stop the Monday after Easter.

Aren't these seasonal flights?

These flights are largely departure from UA"s bread and butter flight planning routes (hub to non-hub, vv + hub-to-hub). It remains to be seen whether UA would bring these kind of revenue flights back next season, or not. I can't see them making these permanent once LGA operations return to some of normalcy, especially given limited slots and flights UA can operate in normal circumstances.

J availability and potential schedule change

Appreciate that schedules beyond beginning of June are still fluid - but I wondered if anyone had any insight into something I noticed on seat availability/scheduling for EWR-KEF.

It looks like (provisionally) United is restarting the Iceland route in June although this appears to be somewhat later than others incl Delta and Icelandair.

Currently showing a 757-200 operating, but on all the days I have checked it looks like the seats available on the seat map are low but J available is much higher (though not by the same number). Example is only 4 available seats showing on seat map but J8 availability. The following day it’s J7 but 5 seats on seatmap and the day before it’s J9 but 8 seats showing.

Is this because United is planning to operate with a larger aircraft or something else going on? Never seen this before..

This may be that UA will block 2 or more seats for TATL crew rest but due to the shorter nature of the KEF they may not be required -- those seats will be unblocked closer to flight time.

If you have access to ExpertFlyer, it will show which seats are occupied and which are blocked.

3AB and 4AB are currently blocked on the 752s and will show up as occupied on public-facing seatmaps. They will open up for selection at T-48h or T-24h.

Ah, makes sense. Any particular reason why they’re blocked though? And does that mean that if one were to book at J4 there’d be no option to select seats until T-48/24? Or would they unblock earlier if demand were there?

As WineCountryUA said, 4AB are usually blocked on longer haul flights for crew rest--no idea why 3AB have also been blocked. They will not unblock seats even if the cabin is booked full--the last few to book will have to wait until close in to select their seats.

I'm not sure if this is a result of consolidation of flights, or an error in the search engine, but some flights are not showing on the search page. See, for example, the LAX-EWR redeye on 5/26, which shows on the cargo page but not on the booking engine. Is this one already sold out? Or slated for cancellation?

Not sure why but the inventory is zeroed for 5/26. They may have downgauged from 781 to 752 with the schedule update last week (didn't check). F is full but Y is not. Maybe F is so over that they closed the flight inventory.

As I waited for schedules to finalize, costs increased by several hundred % on my EWR-BNA searches. What used to be a 4-6 daily schedule, with at least two of those mainline, is now twice daily E170/5. The frustrating aspect is that direct flights- what in 2019 were $200-350 on average- are now consistently $1k+ RT a month or two out if traveling over a weekend. Seems like they've downgauged to a point where their booked capacity almost exceeds their available seats for sale on the day they downgauge, effectively making the route unbookable. The funny thing is that within 24 hours, most of those $1500 become $250 when they get their slew of cancellations from the people who had originally booked different flights.

I have now three times flown DL from LGA (a HIKE from me, but I'm not paying $1295 RT when I can pay $200 RT and fly with an airline I know won't delay me) and will likely continue to do so until this madness changes. There is now absolutely no desire for me to ever continue to be 1K. I'll use my credit and then simply book whomever.
