Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

I see IAH-LHR tentative restart pushed out again to 7/1. Hoping it sticks this time around with holiday travel to London as we are booked 7/2. Can deal with a stop in EWR but would prefer non stop. On the plus side it looks like the Iceland route from EWR survived which is on our return leg

Messaging seems to be odd from UA - here we have AA announcing yesterday they’d run 90% domestic/80% international capacity v. Summer 2019 whereas UA is pulling routes and flights all over the place.

You're a bit more optimistic that I am. Right now it's still mandatory testing and quarantine on arrival. I'm hoping the quarantine will be lifted with proof of vaccination by late September when we are booked. I'd give July 50/50 at best.

I think the proverbial "pig-through-the-python" issues around demand > equipment > staffing are going to take UA/AA/DL a while to get through. Who knows where UA ends up falling in that operational efficiency scramble but until someone else starts eating their lunch it seems like they're more than content to just wait and see. To several points up thread, there are trips that I want to book right now where I'm entirely cost insensitive but where I just can't make the logistics work due to lack of frequency/seat inventory.

You’re right about the quarantine (which is clearly a huge obstacle to many and impacts schedules as a result) but effective May 17 they are moving back to green/amber/red country ratings and it’s widely expected (though a lot can change, I know) that the USA will be on the “green list” with testing but no quarantine.

Given the UK obsession with risk of variants I doubt there will be exemption from testing even with vaccination proof any time soon.

AUS-EWR-EDI flight just flipped to "Waitlisted" on the United App and Google flights shows this isn't for sale anymore. Purchased Biz class ticket. Reroute through web showing 10K in additional costs (3 seats) to reroute.

What are my options?

The additional mileage should be waived at the payment stage, if not call.
Is the new routing all UA?

It's a cash fare. New flights would be Lufthansa.

You may have a hard time getting UA to issue AUS-FRA-EDI, although if you try it with UA flight numbers you may have a better chance. (Has LH resumed service to Austin? I'd be surprised). AUS-IAH-FRA-EDI, with IAH-FRA on UA, might be an easier sell.

Either way, if you can't get something you like on the web (without an additional charge), call and be prepared to ask for specific flights that come up on a United.com search. "I see a flight, UA7971 from AUS to FRA..." etc. is the best way to try to get the all-Lufthansa routing.

AUS-FRA still showing up, FWIW, although the routing through IAH is probably safer.

I shouldn't have to pay any fare difference on this, right?

UA is under no obligation to rebook on LH in the case of advance schedule change of a previously all UA itin. The fare different is only waived if rebooked on UA. Refund is the other option.

You can try the codeshare approach, guessing that is not a high likelihood

I've spent several minutes scrolling up in this thread and haven't seen this mentioned... does anyone else feel like EWR is United's redheaded stepchild with the current schedule? I'm not seeing increased direct domestic availability here. I'm flying for business but my travel also includes leisure destinations... and I've noticed with increasing frequency that a destination I'm trying to get to is served by every hub except for EWR.

I've run into this a bunch of times and chalked it up to "well everything's tough right now, it will normalize soon" but I need to get to the redneck riviera on business coming up, and there is no nonstop availability throughout the entire region, despite being serviced by all other hubs sans-SFO.

PNS - direct available from IAH, IAD, ORD and DEN
VPS - direct available from IAH (x2), ORD and DEN
ECP - direct available from IAH (x3), IAD, ORD and DEN

Obviously, it's frustrating. But beyond that, I'm wondering how this can happen at EWR with United's dominance here. And will it actually get better like I thought? Absent any inside knowledge, I'll even take speculation at this point.

OK, thanks--I like to know my baseline situation before calling.

It doesn't seem to be specific to UA and EWR. Service seems to be slower coming back to all NYC area airports on all airlines, compared to airports in other regions of the country.

Going through IAH worked great, thanks for the advice!
