DEN-CUN cpu
For Sunday, myself + 1, Gold (regular Gold, non-promo), K fare, cleared at six minutes past 48 hour mark. It looked like we may be the only gold on the flight, as there were seven seats in Business open (out of 20) when I looked the night before, and five seats open when selecting our seats. Well, scratch that conjecture, just looked again at 20 hours prior to flight, and there are seven Business seats open. This is my first year being Gold, previously Silver, and this is my first-ever cpu success. Hooray!

UAL Complimentary Premier Upgrades are a sham
UAL Complimentary Premier Upgrades are a sham. As 1K 2.2 Million Mile flier on UAL have not had one free upgrade in last 2.5 years of flying. UAL upsells first class seats until plane takes off. Same issue with GPU. Booked flight for July 2016 from China to US using GPU and all 36 business/first seats open at time of booking and still put on waiting list. This will be last year as 1K on UAL, not worth it.

I wouldn't call it a sham, I'd call it a benefit that is more and more rare to see achieved.
I don't know what your flying patterns are, but both as Gold and Plat I clear CPU decently often on non-hub routes and especially when its at non-peak times. When I fly ORD-SFO, IAD-SFO, or IAH-SFO, though, I can pretty much be assured that I won't be clearing a CPU.

Gee, the gold I sat next to this morning who got a CPU would probably disagree, so would the platinum from last night.
Not to mention myself, I am 11/14 so far this year

As a UA Platinum, I've had success, probably 35% chance. As a Gold, that goes down to 5%.

As a silver, my upgrade rate is 0% and I am mostly in the 20s on the list.
FWIW, My upgrade rates on DL, as a silver as well, are much higher.

So far this year I have taken 13 flights which are CPU eligible. I have got CPU 3 times. If you take out the hub-hub & LGA-ORD flights. It is 3/7. All upgrades were as gold status

I'm at about 35% this year...gold except for the last trip, which I was a plat for. I probably would have been upgraded on an additional segment of the last trip, but switched my connection point last minute as I didn't want to get stranded in Houston. Two of the segments, to be fair, were miles upgrades...I may or may not have cleared without it.
I wouldn't say its a scam...I would say that UA prefers to get money for the seats vs. not...which doesn't seem odd to me...though apparently it does to many elites who seem to think UA isn't running a business. Upgrades are certainly less frequent...but for me, if I pay for economy, my expectation is that's where I'll be sitting...and if I really want F, then I'll buy it either outright or with miles and R availability.

As a silver my upgrade rate this year is 2/10 on CPU eligible flights.
IAH-CVG on a Friday morning and IAH-MEX on a Thursday night.

Have the *pleasure* of flying EWR-MCO later this week on a personal trip. Enjoying the rare instance of a pre-airport CPU! About 5 of us filled the R space right at the 96 hour mark (and one the day before at 120 hr).
Although I can't say this was surprising at all. When I booked the flight originally, e- was completely (literally) full, with only a handful of e+ seats taken.

I'm a 13 year 1K. This year I am 1/37 (2.7%) on CPU upgrades in 2016. I don't really fly hub to hub, or LGA-ORD etc. Mine is just a mix across the network.
I did have at least five flights where a gold member was upgrades before me on a lower fare class than mine (I bought their ticket, so I know).
Probably the upgrade "glitch" that they are in no hurry to fix

Most hub-hub I'm in paid F as part of a segment TPAC. For eligible flights, I'm 2/3, cleared segments DFW-ORD and SFO-SNA.
