This plane is scheduled to be arriving into GUM today from HKG. Why is there another domestic configuration being introduced? Also, if UA was adding 32 seats in united first//business, why didn't they just use the Polaris seats which already fit 32 in the Polaris configured 772, vs using their old IPTE seats - why do we keep going back to old seats? I dont understand. From the UA App and thinking about the current domestic 772 config, they would have to remove the galley slightly forward of door 2 in order to add four more seats in united first/business. Does that mean there is a bulkhead then either behind row 4, or forward of row 16?

The reason is need, cost and space. The 772ERs have the range to eliminate weight restrictions on ORD-HNL/OGG, potentially use on East Coast HNL and free up 4 772A units to increase Domestic 772 service.

The 772ERs have the lav behind Door 2 instead of in front of Door 2, thus 4 more BF seats fit. That drops Y by 4 total seats. As for the IPTE seats, they can fit more seats than than the Diamond seats and a lot more than Polaris seats. The Diamond seats would have been nice and really nice if they could be placed on the 772A, but that requires an STC, down time, would lose seat count and, with these aircraft having a few years left, too expense. If only on the 772ER,s Diamond seats would have UA offering 3 seats at the front of widebody aircraft and lose 2, to 6 seats.

It is assumed these aircraft will fly ORD-HNL/OGG and potentially EWR-HNL, so there will be a small aircraft rotation. But, its impossible to route 4 aircraft without down time and redeyes don't provide down time, so the routing could vary by day of the week, float a unit, have a short day or include HNL-GUM, which has a long layover. For sure UA will float the first unit or 2 and probably adjust from standard 772A seat maps a couple days out when they are scheduled.

How many of the 757's are in the 16/160 configuration? I'm taking IAD-LHR morning flight in 3 weeks, just wondering how many are floating through the system now.

Are they going to put a new fleet code just to these 4 birds other than 77G and 77M ? Or continue to use the old 77Q ?

I would think these 4 birds have more than a few years left since they are 6 years younger than 77M, maybe potentially replace the 3 originally XC 23xx first ? Since those are really only have a few years left before they reach 30 years old.

Per the fleet site, UA has 7 772 mod lines open but only 4 non-Polaris birds still flying.

do we know what will happen to these lines once 772 conversions are finished? Will they shift to other aircraft?

Correct, there are seven 772 mod lines, 4 772GE in HKG, 1 772GE in XMN, 1 772PW in XMN plus the 1 772PW going Domestic.

There are also two 763 mod lines in HKG and three 787 mod lines at XMN. I've assumed that they would switch over to 763s and 787s -

Summerized estimates on this page. https://sites.google.com/site/united...s-mod-schedule
Note: this is not company information, rather only a guess of how the remaining non-Polaris aircraft will be converted and there are 23 more 789s not in the estimate. One could assume all 11 lines go 789, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens or is announced.

I don't think the Diamond loses seat count over the IPTE... at the time the domestic ships were first modded, there weren't any surplus Diamond 777 seats available.

8 v 6 across? IPTE seems more densely packed. Current Polaris also more dense than CO BF.

Wouldn't IPTE and pmCO seats be similar? If you look at current 777HD they have 28J 2-4-2 J seats between doors 1 and 2 along with 2 lavs. Looking at pmCO 772, they have 26J 2-2-2 between doors 1 and 2 along with 3 lavs. So if you take out the forward lav and that back closet, you could fit 28J with pmCO seats.

Comparing other carriers who have the same seats: KL 772 has 28J with 1 lav and SU (Aeroflot) 77W has 30J between doors 1 and 2 and no lavs.

It's not that simple. You need to look at how many seats will fit in a given space, because there is overlap, rather than simply counting seats across. On the 777, IPTE and Diamond are of similar density, thought I think IPTE would allow a few more seats in a similar space.

Current Polaris is slightly less dense than the Diamond/IPTE configuration.
