]United Airlines Preparing New Nonstop Seasonal Service Between New York/Newark and Cape Town, South Africa
United's new nonstop service will save customers nearly eight hours of travel time roundtrip between New York and Cape Town
CHICAGO, April 15, 2019
United Airlines today applied with the U.S. Department of Transportation for authority to begin new service between New York/Newark Liberty International Airport and Cape Town International Airport. United plans to operate nonstop three-times weekly flights to Cape Town starting in December 2019.

"We are always looking at ways to expand our industry-leading international route network to offer our customers more convenient options. We're thrilled to announce the addition of Africa to our global route offering," said Patrick Quayle, United's vice president of International Network. "

This new flight will provide customers with the only nonstop service between the United States and Cape Town." United's nonstop service between New York/Newark and Cape Town will decrease the current travel time from New York to Cape Town by more than four hours and provide customers from more than 80 U.S. cities with easy one-stop access to Cape Town. If approved, United's service between New York/Newark and Cape Town will be operated with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft featuring 48 seats in United Polaris business class, 88 seats in United Economy Plus and 116 seats in United Economy.

Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa and the country's center of trade and commerce. Located at the shore of Table Bay, the city is home to some of the most popular attractions in South Africa including Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Travelers to South Africa often begin their African journey in Cape Town before touring the Cape Winelands, viewing the African penguins at Boulder Beach or traveling beyond Cape Town to explore South Africa's natural beauty including its many national parks, game reserves and beautiful coastlines and beaches of the KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape provinces.
Seasonal until end of March 2020

United scraps Cape Town flights
United Airlines has confirmed it has dropped Cape Town from its 2020 Iata winter (Northern hemisphere) schedule but plans to relaunch the seasonal service from New York’s Newark International Airport in October next year. The plans for the Johannesburg service starting in 2021 remain unaffected.
Although the carrier didn’t give an official reason for the cancellation, the move is understood to be attributable to the impact of the current COVID-19 crisis on the airline’s worldwide schedule. “United Airlines will relaunch its seasonal winter service between Cape Town and New York/Newark for the 2021 (Northern hemisphere) winter travel season. The airline looks forward to beginning a new, non-stop daily service between Johannesburg and New York/Newark on March 28, 2021,” a spokesperson told Tourism Update.

Update - after TK schedule changes I had to call UA to fix them . It turns out original agent that put us on TK made a mistake. UA can only protect us on LH. Now I'm booked on LH.

If it's not back in the schedule soon for Oct '21'I suspect they will cancel this one and just service JNB.

Such a shame they canceled this. Understandable of course, but just a real shame.

Looks like it's back on the schedule departing EWR Sun Oct 31. Seeing business class fares for ~$2780.

FWIW. Booked UA, from US to SA, for December holidays. No issues with booking via united.com - no complaints or hiccups with flight availability, etc. Covid shot (J&J) pending (touch wood) in the next week or so.

We are too, scheduled into JNB over Labor Day weekend, and we will be vaccinated as well. Is the thought that with vaccines, SA should be open for tourism by later summer?

They've been open for some time now. There's just no demand for flights from the US.

Do you have any reference sources for that? I am not trying to argue/dispute your statement, just curious as we travel frequently to sub-saharan Africa. UA's nonstop service between EWR and JNB presents a very good value for folks like us (round trip between ORD and JNB via EWR is below $3000 in business).

You mean besides for UA scrubbing all CPT flights this season and UA and DL scrubbing all JNB flights until at least June despite SA reopening months ago?

JNB keeps getting pushed back and it's not because UA and DL are cancelling full flights...

There are other airlines flying into South Africa with flight loads anywhere from 25% to 75% (ET, TK, QR, KQ, etc). I've been checking seat maps the day before/day of travel as a basis. That is why I was asking if you had a data source on this, hoping for something a bit more scientific or accurate.

25-75% should be enough of an indicator demand is low

The vaccine rollout is going dismally slowly in South Africa. Labor day would be optimistic. My opinion is Feb/March 22 is probably safer.
