Update: 06 Sept 2017 - Latest waiver posting

Previous waivers:

Update: 30 Aug 2017
Hurricane Harvey continues to affect flights to and from Texas and the Gulf Coast

United flights to and from Texas and the Gulf Coast continue to be affected by Hurricane Harvey. There are now a limited number of flights operating between Houston and other major U.S. airports, but many flights to and from Houston continue to be canceled.

Please check your flight status before you go to the airport, and sign up to receive flight status messages in the event of changes. Also note that road conditions around the airport continue to be poor, so travelers should carefully plan their travel to and from the airport.

If you have an upcoming United flight that includes travel through Houston, we recommend postponing your travel until conditions improve. The Houston area is extremely taxed and may not have the resources to offer hotel and restaurant services to Houston visitors.

Travelers with booked flights to, from or through the Texas and Gulf Coast area can use our travel waiver to change their flight. Please note that we are experiencing a high volume of calls due to the severity of the situation, so we recommend using united.com or the United app.
Update (08/29/17 15:50 CDT):
Booking waiver now extended through 12 September and changes covered through November 15th

We aren't frequent travelers, so looking for advice. Should we just go ahead and book ourselves on another airline - say Delta (goes through ATL) or American (Charlotte)? Will be a bit more expensive to do that, but I suppose it's more important to pay the extra cost of last minute booking through them (as opposed to not being able to go at all).

I realize United has issued a travel waiver, but that just allows me to change dates, right? And we can't change the dates
If there are other connections available, they'll likely reroute you. Probably through ORD. Just call them and ask what your options are. Don't book on another airline without calling UA first. They're often able to work out an acceptable alternative.

Thanks for your reply. I am on the phone with them now.

(I did read there may be issues even with re-routes due to delays/cancellation impact over the whole United system. That was another reason I was considering just buying new one way tix on another airline.)

Welcome to FT, and congratulations on your anniversary! :-)

I see seats available on the morning flights through DEN or ORD. Everything else seems to be full, or down to 1 remaining seat -- not great for a party of two. Specifically, try the 7:25 AM departure to Denver or the 7:50 AM departure to Chicago.

If traveling Wednesday afternoon is an option, there are also seats on the 2:10 PM flight Wednesday through Chicago. Of course, you'd be on the hook for a hotel room in San Francisco, but that would likely be cheaper than buying tickets on another airline.

Good luck!

If getting there above all is paramount, you could book a refundable booking on another airline just in case.

Just keep in mind that if you don't fly United on the way there, they'll cancel the return as well. So you need to buy a round trip on another airline.

update to my post...both legs canceled (no shock) and I went to the airport where I am to try to re-schedule me through ORD. The young customer service person told me this was not allowed by the rules and was scared to make the change (she got on the phone to call UA and was on hold). Thankfully, an older UA employee was there and told her this is not a normal situation and to do what you need to do. She reminded the other CSR the golden rule. In the end, I got re-routed. Kudos to the older CSR with common sense. In times like this, the company has to delegate authorities down so that real time common sense decisions can be made that will alleviate issues in IAH. Otherwise, the rule followers will make things worse for everyone. That is my 2 cents...

Great to hear. United does have some great knowledgeable agents but they do have some that have no idea what the rules are. Good luck on your travels!

There is a flight scheduled to leave tonight at 930 to SFO. Any ideas wether this will actually happen. I need to get to the Northeast tomorrow but if I can get out of Houston today I should be good.

I probably could figure out a way there, as the crow flies I'm only 3 miles from IAH. My daughter is stuck in a hotel in DFW. I can get there so I may drive there switch out vehicles and fly from there.

Well I'm supposed to fly to MSY via IAH on the first. I'm worried about it now. I wish they would just weather waive it so I can for sure cancel my hotel reservation sooner than later so I don't get stuck paying for the hotel.

Nevermind they just updated the waiver all the way to the 5th. August 25 – September 5, 2017

Not sure when this changed, but weather waiver is now valid for any traveling originating August 25 - September 5.
