Update: 06 Sept 2017 - Latest waiver posting

Previous waivers:

Update: 30 Aug 2017
Hurricane Harvey continues to affect flights to and from Texas and the Gulf Coast

United flights to and from Texas and the Gulf Coast continue to be affected by Hurricane Harvey. There are now a limited number of flights operating between Houston and other major U.S. airports, but many flights to and from Houston continue to be canceled.

Please check your flight status before you go to the airport, and sign up to receive flight status messages in the event of changes. Also note that road conditions around the airport continue to be poor, so travelers should carefully plan their travel to and from the airport.

If you have an upcoming United flight that includes travel through Houston, we recommend postponing your travel until conditions improve. The Houston area is extremely taxed and may not have the resources to offer hotel and restaurant services to Houston visitors.

Travelers with booked flights to, from or through the Texas and Gulf Coast area can use our travel waiver to change their flight. Please note that we are experiencing a high volume of calls due to the severity of the situation, so we recommend using united.com or the United app.
Update (08/29/17 15:50 CDT):
Booking waiver now extended through 12 September and changes covered through November 15th

Wow. My sympathies to everyone affected. What else is damaged at HOU airport?

Logic would suggest it might be awhile before that airport reopens.

Would only be guesses, will depend on the weather and many unknown factors

Would either delay or alternative routing -- UA offers EWR. Others via LAX or MIA or ...
Worth checking to see if an agent might do a "free" change.

Would avoid IAH for at least a week, probably more. Allow those that need to be in or out of the effected area the first priority.

Could it be potentially bringing in DR staff and equipment?

Yeah, that's probably it as the seat map is empty on the outbound, and is considerably full on the inbound back to ORD.

United obviously does not believe this will be the actual opening time - South-America flights to IAH on 8/29 have now been cancelled, at least those from Brazil and north of it (EZE still is listed as going). All the planes are here, so if IAH was accepting flights everything could be going quickly.

Luckily I changed my flights on that day already on Friday as now each and every flight to the US on 8/29 is either sold out or at least almost full...

Greetings - Dirk

I almost always go DEN-IAH-LHR when I have to go to London but for some odd reason decided to go through ORD tomorrow and really glad I'm not having to scramble.

That's a UA internal decision. FAA still say the airport is expect3e to re-open at Noon CT, not that I expect that will actually happen.

and, runway conditions don't seem to be good either

WN evacuating 500 stranded people out of HOU to Dallas Love per CNN. Sounds like airport has become an island.

I saw some of those flights on live radar a few hours ago. Must have been an interesting experience for those onboard.

Here's the story. Obviously, there's a non-flooded runway at the airport.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/27/us/sou...ort/index.html

While the humanitarian angle plays well (and I do believe WN cares about its customers), the reality is that they're also getting 5 aircraft out of a closed airport and back into service. So I guess it's a win-win.

Just took off right now. Ferried down from ORD empty. Looks like half full up front, and mostly filled in back. Only aircraft flying right now in the Houston area.
