Ah, but this is flyertalk (Flyertalk? FlyerTalk?)

If the unfortunate person who made it through the engine is a diehard FT, which thread(s)/forum(s) (fora) would they post to?
(United Airlines | MileagePlus will do for now but you get the idea... )

So would a UA truck stalling behind the plane count as their fault or not? What about WX and UA having to cancel a flight because the plane was flown to DEN the night before a snowstorm and now can't fly the MCO-IAD portion of DEN-MCO-IAD, is that their fault because they didn't cancel the inbound to DEN prior to the snowstorm? I find a lot of issues with your binary system.

Dunno. That's the problem with using reason codes instead of a short set of text that describes what happened. What I was getting at is what most folks really want to know if United Air Lines is accepting the responsibility for the delayed/cancelled flight - or not. If they are accepting the responsibility for the delay/cancel, then there are services and vouchers that go with this. If they are not, then passengers don't get anything.

Instead you get "Delay due to Airport Conditions" (which could cover much of what you identified) and many others from UA.

Personally, I think it would be cool if the GA (or whomever enters the delay/cancel reason response) had 140 characters a la Twitter to provide a _good_ or interesting reason: e.g. Customer's dog pooped in 1st Class Lav.

Or we could go the ICD (International Classification of Diseases) route and have the W61.62XA Struck by duck, initial encounter or R46.0 Very low level of personal hygiene detailed codes as cited by fgirard and WineCountryUA ('tho to be fair, WineCountryUA referenced V97.33XD Sucked into jet engine, subsequent encounter).

I don't really know how to read these, from what I gather they had to make a stop in HNL?

While certainly not a perfect flight, I wouldn't say that arriving 2:40 late to LAX on an 8000 mile flight that had to divert to HNL is disgraceful. It actually seems like UA handled the issue pretty efficiently.

But it seems that they are running their crews right up to the limit. Could it be that many pilots are hitting their maximum hours for the month?

Do we know why the diversion occurred? Maybe a couple of FAs became ill on the flight from MEL.

Usually EF will say Crew Availability if it is due to the crew, they are saying Fuel Stop, the could be strong headwinds over the Pacific.

They were only 18min late out of MEL so I doubt it was crew, in addition if you look at the flight map on FR24 they planned to fly to HNL from MEL (didn't change course 1/2 way into the flight) so most likely fuel stop due to headwinds
