What I would have done too. Enjoy Thailand!

Does anyone know whether these weather issues in HKG at this time of the year are occur every year? How long are they expected to last? I am booked on UA-869 in early September and would like to know if I should make contingent plans.

TS Hato. HKG gets a few of these every season.

Yes, this is "typhoon season," and they sometimes occur as late as October. Typhoons are somewhat predictable, so you can start checking the government's weather website a few days prior to your travel to get a forecast: www.hko.gov.hk/wxinfo/currwx/fnd.htm. They post typhoon warnings as well.

HK airport will be closed in the morning and accordingly the majority of flights have been cancelled. So HK to EWR, ORD, SFO have all been cancelled for 8/23

And just to close the loop, "typhoon" is the same weather phenomenon that we call a hurricane. Only difference is the location.

Chances that UA149 on 8/22 will take off?

EWR-GRU 8/22

We have been sitting here with engines running for almost 2 hrs. Our flight path is in the way of the storms apparently. Pilot says we need to go back to the gate to refuel. What are the chances the crew won't time out and we take off?

the load is extremely light - hardly 15 people in the entire E+ cabin!! Worried they may cancel the flight.

I need to be in GRU for a series of meetings starting at 9 AM on Thursday. The only options I see are Avianca and Copa out of JFK (leaving tomorrow morning and reaching late night tomorrow). Am I missing anything?

Thanks!

Yeah, if the United flight doesn't operate, then those "day flight" journeys transiting BOG or PTY are probably your best bet.

The nonstop JFK-GRU service on LATAM operates Wed 7:35pm--6:25am but landing at 0625 to make 0900 meetings is pretty brutal.

UA 89 EWR-PEK B772 was taxiing out to the runway but is now headed back to Terminal C. Reason unknown at this time.

On the plane now, reason due to circuit signal problems between the APU and flight deck. Captain said that maintenance has fixed it and now refueling and filing new papers.

UAL 89 pushed and taxied out, but stopped on the taxiway again on its way to Runway 22R. Had been there for about 10-15 minutes, about 2,500 short of the runway end, so was looking concerning for a return to gate again.

Alas, problem seemed to be solved, aircraft just took the runway for takeoff, down just shy of 3 hours.
