I was on UA990 SFO-CDG 789 departing SFO on 9/15/17 which diverted to EWR for a passenger with a medical issue. Flight crew was unable to continue as I believe they were going to time out, so flight will continue on from EWR as UA2745 at 7:45PM on 9/16. I already recieved a compensation offer via e-mail by the time I hit my hotel.

This is what I just don't understand. At a major hub, UA is unable to drum up a crew to permit this flight to proceed with something less than an 18 hour delay. Given the costs of putting up 220 pax at hotels plus compensation, etc. Is it really cost effective for UA to run its crewing so lean?

The issue with this one is Newark is not a 787 base for pilots. So they're left with two fairly unattractive options.

First is deadheading a crew in from a 787 base. At 12:42am, that just isn't happening. So the alternative is to send the crew to a hotel for their required rest. Yes, they'd be ready to go the next afternoon but not knowing what curfews are for CDG, what operational/ground staff is there, if public transport is still running, etc. passengers probably aren't looking to land there at 2am to then try to figure out a way to where they're going. At that point, they just do what they did which is schedule it as a "normal" redeye departure out of Newark.

On UA944 ORD-FRA. Delayed due to Mx. First plane was swapped out and the new one has intercom issues. Still waiting for any word.

Been brutal lately on my TATLs out of ORD.

But if this is the case, why not divert to IAD which is a 787 base?

Who knows - could be operational (more ground staff at close to 1am, more hotels available, etc. in Newark). Could be medical urgency (Newark closer than Dulles). Even if they do go to Dulles, the odds of having two 787 pilots sitting on reserve and available to get to the airport for a 2am departure on a couple hour's notice is slim to none.

Update: now at 3 1/2 hour delay they made us get off. Now on the ORD-MUC flight which ironically is using the same aircraft that the FRA one was supposed to use. Guess it's been fixed.

UA 989 IAD-FRA departed 20 mins late due to a stalled ground support vehicle behind the aircraft which prevented pushback. Website says "flight delayed due to a/c maintenance."

They are creative in their excuses, I'll grant them that.

In fairness, the flight status page has a relatively limited number of reasons it can give.
