Also-
UA142 NRT-DEN on 9/5 cancelled "due to operational difficulties" although the inbound is almost to NRT. EF shows crew availability, which is interesting as the DEN-NRT flights have been mostly ontime all week.

There's no reason to assume that the crew for UA142 came from a previous DEN-NRT flight. UA can (and does) schedule things like DEN-NRT-SFO-NRT-DEN or whatever. (Not necessarily this particular pattern -- that's just an example).

It was originally scheduled to be N2331U (not 2131). That plane landed at EWR from SFO as UA535 a few minutes late just after 8pm. They did the aircraft change at 9pm, so MX of some form seems likely.
