I think they have replaced it with showing several (3) different classes for each segment no matter what.

Thanks

AFAIK, you could never select fare class by segment, or even direction (unless booking one ways). You had to call for that - the website would only let you select fare classes that would apply to the entire trip you are booking. However, the web site would also split into different fare classes (or break the fare) of different segments if it was cheaper then faring it together.

In the advanced search of the new site, you can still specify fare class, but to do that by segment, you still have to call.

Drip, Drip, Drip; UA charges 1Ks for E+ ?

WARNING FELLOW FTers

Me = 1K; purchaser of ticket
Mrs. Gpicur = 1K; traveler

I used the "new" United.com and Purchased a FF Mixed class ticket, ORD-EWR-FRA-DMM today for 80K miles + $40 in taxes. The EWR-FRA & FRA-DMM booked into (LH metal) business class and ORD-EWR booked into economy for Mrs. Gpicur. When I went to select the seats on the UA ORD-EWR segment, UA charged me $69 for Economy Plus Seating. I paid it and am hopping mad.

HAVE others experienced this problem, has there been a change in 1K benefits or is it a concerted effort on the part of UA to sneek unwarranted charges past their 1K customers ?

I contacted 1Kvoice via email but I did not received the acknowledgement email that they received my complaint as I have come to expect in past correspondence with 1KVoice.

I am suspicious of United ever since they charged me for a bag at SRQ when flying first class this past summer. They did eventually refund the bag fee but only after lengthy email explanation of facts.

No indication anywhere that UA will charge 1Ks. Why did you pay? I would have called United to get them to put you and your wife in E+ free of charge.

I'd still call them to refund the money and make them aware of the bug in the new website.

I noticed the same bug. Logging in and out fixed it.

I had the same experience. I simply did not select a seat and called the 1K line. My guess is the problem will go away assuming IT continues to fix problems with the site.

On a different note, I was trying to book a multi-city set of flights and the new web site refused to show availability in premium classes between Boston and SFO. I could see the fights on a simple RT and if I went to the old site (using a different browser where I'm willing to clear its history/cache) I could see the exact flights that I wanted to book. In this multi-city trip I decided to book the last segment in coach because the first class seat changed the fare from $2,600 to $6,000 despite the last segment showing a cost of $75. I ended up calling reservations and they could only see the $6,000 fare for the selected flights. I then asked them to do the booking using booking code which included a "G" fare for the final segment. This brought the fare down to $2,600 and the agent was able to book the flight

It sounds like OP booked the ticket for his spouse only and is NOT traveling? If so, the charge for E+ is correct since the inheriting of mileage donor status is dead since earlier this year (as it should be btw).

This is absolutely correct. If OP and spouse are both traveling, then E+ is free for both. If spouse is flying alone, the 1K benefits do not transfer and E+ must be paid. No premier benefits are transferable unless the elite member is travelling (as of 2015).

OP doesn't say specifically, but he is a 1K and handle indicated a MM... so purely guessing she is the companion benefactor?

Spouse is 1K as well.

Don't they also have to be on the same reservation?

Neil35 Sep 30, 2015 7:48 am

As OP indicated

Mrs. Gpicur = 1K; traveler
His wife should have 1K travel benefits, period. Whether she got the status through MM companion benefactor is irrelevant.

I am with aacharya, it's probably a login/logout problem.

OP said wife is 1K. If you look at OP's status, he is a Million Miler 1K. My guess is that the OP's wife is 1K by way of his status match. (That's how it works in my household). Wife is a FULL 1K regardless of whether or not she's traveling with the OP. (The only difference between the two 1Ks is that the sponsored 1K doesn't get GPUs and RPUs).

So, we're back to square one. This is another (in)famous UA glitch which may or may not be rectified as long as UA is illegitimately collecting revenue.

Why wouldn't you just call UA and have them assign E+ for free? This is clearly a glitch, since spouse is 1K.
