My new United Regional Premier Upgrade (RPU) strategy

Regional Premier® Upgrades (RPUs) are one-way, one-cabin, space available confirmable upgrades as early as the time of ticketing on eligible UA/UX and Copa Airlines-operated flights. They can be used on any fare and any flight that is also CPU eligible and on PS flights. This includes some Oceania and some COPA South America flights. They are generally not usable on flights outside of North America -- see upgrade region chart for details.

PS and non-west coast Hawaii flights are considered one of the better uses of RPUs since those flights are not CPU eligible and since elites are subject to copays on mileage upgrades.

RPUs are earned by elites -- (Re-)qualifying for Premier Platinum earns 2 RPU for the rest of the year, all of the next year and then thru 31 January of the following year. Re-)qualifying for Premier 1K earns 2 more RPUs and you can then earn 2 more RPUs for each additional 25K PQMs.
Unlike GPUs, UA does not offer an extension of unused and about to expire RPUs.

2MM, assuming they did not otherwise qualify for Platinum in the prior year, will have 2 RPUs deposited into their account around mid-January. 3MM+, assuming they did not otherwise qualify for 1K in the prior year, will have 2 RPUs and 6 GPUs deposited into their account around mid-January.

RPUs can be used for other individuals / friends / family but the upgrade priority is based on the status of the flyer, not the earning elite.

RPUs require PZ space (formerly R) to clear (except for GS RPUs which clear into PN space). For a given flight, RPU /GPU or Mileage+Copay have the same waitlist priority -- what does matter is passenger Status then Fare Class and then the time of the request. For more on waitlisting, see Understanding the United Upgrade List Comprehensively

A Regional Premier Upgrade will be considered used if any segment of an itinerary is upgraded and flown - no exception. Miles and GPUs have an exception if the waitlisted International BF/GF (now called Polaris business / first) does not clear, the miles/GPU will be returned -- this does not apply to RPUs. Recent changes in the rules make it clear there is no exception for PS routes.

Note on most RPU routes, a "connection" needs to be under 4 hours (longer only if it is the next scheduled flight) or a single RPU will not apply. This standard stopover definition for North American flights.

A single RPU (or GPU or Miles+copay) can not be applied to flights on different PNRs (or for different carriers even on the same PNR).

Extension on RPUs expiring 1/31/17?

On March 1, 2016 I submitted a request to use my two RPUs earned for Platinum in 2015 for a HNL to ORD flight on 1/15/17. At that time, FC on that 777/200 was wide open. My RPUs have yet to clear after 10.5 months with the RPU upgrade request still in place. Currently they are showing R0 seats still available, plus F1 (just one FC seat for sale) plus 4 extra seats that don't seem to be in inventory. If I don't get my upgrade request filled by time the flight departs on Sunday, is there any chance United will extend my RPUs beyond January 31, 2017? Any advice or past experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

No. We'd all love extensions if our RPUs didn't clear...

Sunday is about the worst day (after Saturday) to try to use them on that route. Plus, it's peak season.

I've never heard of any extensions being offered.

They have not and there has not been a posting of anyone getting such an extension.

They do this for GPUs but not for RPUs.

Newly minted UA Plat member here. I have an upcoming trip from CVG-IAH-SEA that clocks in at just under 10 hours, flying on a CR7 (for 3 hours) and 737-900 (for 5 hours) with availabile R space.

However, none of the segments have lay flat seats. Is it worth burning one of my two RPUs for this?

Will this be your best opportunity for the RPU usage in 2017?
5 hour flight is a good use (especially if it will clear on booking) but PS or Hawaii flights (can be hard to clear) are considered the highest use.

Probably. I have award tickets booked through DL for a trip to Hawaii and don't plan to fly any PS segments this year. It just seems like a waste to RPU on flights that don't have lie-flat. Are the only lie-flats now on Hawaii and PS?

Those are the only domestic routes that are 100% ( PS & EWR/IAD/IAH soon ORD & DEN? to Hawaii and some from SFO/LAX).

Many other domestic routes will have some lie-flat, such as http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...ps-routes.html
and http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...ic-routes.html

I also am looking for the "best use" of my 2 RPU upgrades and would love to use them on a Hawaii return or on a Copa South American flight (and at the risk of being called dumb, will someone please tell me what they mean by Oceania being an option??!!).
But really more important is to have a flight that will clear on booking as I will be manufacturing (for fun because I can!!) this trip to get best value out of RPU and don't want to risk it not clearing.
So my question is, is there an way to see which flights will or even may clear at time of booking?

Please be kind with your replies as I consider myself a Premier Plat RPU newbie (as its been a couple/few years since my last use of an RPU at which time it was automatic from my notoriously bad memory).

You need to look for R class availability in Expert Mode. Log in, View Account, View Profile, View All Flight Search Preferences, enable Expert Mode. Available fare classes will then appear in searches.

Great! I will try that! So presumably you are saying if there is an R code flight available and I pick that flight, I should be able to book the upgrade at time of purchase.

OK - one more question - sorry didn't think to ask this originally. Can one use an RPU to upgrade an award flight or are they only good on purchased flights.

Thanks so much! Hope to one day be able to answer a question rather than just ask them!

If R is available, your purchased fare can be upgraded at that time.

Award tickets cannot be upgraded using RPUs.

Thank you again. OK one LAST scenario if I may (yes I am ruthless in trying to get best value).
So what IF I found an R category flight and then purchased it on Amex travel (United is my platinum airline). Could I then call United to apply the RPU...or even better do it myself online at United?

Your time and tutoring are much appreciated!
