From SFO, you can route through any of the hubs on the TPAC, so SFO-EWR-NRT/HKG-SIN is legit. Or SFO-LAX-EWR-NRT/HKG-SIN for the extra 500 miles. SFO-NRT/HKG-SIN alone is close to 20,000 miles though.
I also like SJC-DEN-NRT-SIN for 20k miles rt.. sfo-lax-nrt-sin at about 19k miles rt also works well . Either of these works with a Friday departure & Sunday return. You usually get about 1-3 hours in nrt and 6-7 in sin. Tip: the SATS lounge in SIN has showers & they usually allow *G entry 3-4 hours before flight departure

I totally forgot to tell my home base is SFO, I will be doing at least 3 east coast trips so thats around 20ishk so a trip to Asia might be what I am looking for then, 1000 dollars to SIN sounds nice, BKK would be even better - but I can´t seem to find any such flights though.
My parents are in HKG, so I go back pretty often. For people who want the least numbers of connections, SFO-HKG is definitely a consideration. If you work, all you need is even a half-day off on Friday, then you will be good. You have two long weekends to kill. Thanksgiving, and Christmas. I will have to go back four times between now and Jan 4, so I am looking very closely at those flights. Good luck!

Dawn I only need 21K to 1k and thought I was far away.

Anyone know how to force UA to show the SFO-EWR-HKG/NRT-EWR-SFO routing?

Unless I knew for complete certain that I would be flying 3-4 international trips next year, I would pass on this.

For me, I'm SFO-based and I'll be ~15,600 miles short of 1K, but OK on PQD's. I'm hoping to find a business class mileage run (so with 1.5x class of service bonus on PQM, at least 10,400 miles traveled). I can travel 11/17-20 or 12/13-14. I've been searching, but not finding a good value, but I feel like I'm very close... I usually come up a few thousand short on miles with a good deal. Any destinations that I should be looking at?

I do 6+ international trips a year so it might be worth it

More so if you have the flexibility required to book flights that have R availability at the time of booking. Otherwise you're playing the lottery, hoping that you clear. My one year as a 1K taught me a few lessons... (such as, a GPU is only as good as the best-available flight, which might end up being LAX-LAS!!!!). W fares on some routes can be far more expensive than K fares, and get you zilch other than a chance in the lottery. And without tools like whatever-it-was that I paid to subscribe to, which United shut down inventory access to, it's very difficult game to win.

If you regularly fry through/to NRT from the southeastern US, 1K is absolutely worth it.

I disagree. If I was within 10K miles of 1K, those GPUs would sure come in handy the following year. If, of course, I'd have already hit the PQD mark.

^^ Good point. I've done 1 TPAC and 3 TATLs this year, and my GPUs made three of those trips bearable.

You can use multi-destinations. Although it will often show this routing on its own.

A P class MR SFO-JFK will probably cost $2000 and get you 7500 miles RT so you'll need to do two. How about SFO-HNL RT? Is that a better value? Maybe just do Y class SFO-JFK RT for $300-400, then JFK-LAX/SFO-HNL RT, or SFO-HNL then HNL-SFO/LAX-JFK RT if it's similarly priced. Quick turnaround at JFK or HNL

You can consider a round trip to GUM - there via HNL and back via ICN or NRT, gets you 13000+ miles for <$1000 during your November dates. This price is economy. I did one earlier in the year and managed to upgrade the entire itinerary with 20,000 miles/$75. YMMV.

Sounds great, but how did you do that?

Your dates might be the problem; pricing gets pretty goofy around holidays. There are some crazy good deals to be had (typically on the holiday itself) but the shoulders are expensive.

SFO -CTU, 11/17-19, P class, $3800, 20310 PQM. Or you can do economy (K) for $889 with some magical SDC or a small MR in your Dec window.
