Either that, or their 1980's software isn't capable of doing it any other way.

Got the upgrade

Went online to check in and sure enough, my upgrade to F was there. So in this case 24 hours out for 1K to clear on a K fare. Thanks to all for your opinions.

When I was flying Delta a few years back, I would often upgrade as a Gold the day before the window date. This has not happened to me on UAL ("Upsell Air Lines").

Enjoy! Ask for a 2nd sundae as compensation for the stress.

Just bought my first domestic (non Hawaii) tkts 10 days ago LGA-IAH-LGA, W fare - cleared the outbound at exactly 96 hours (was 5/12 seats taken on a 320) ) cleared return at the 72 hour mark. Was very surprised how easily I cleared this elite heavy Hub route. Both flights had over 30 people in the wait list by the time I flew. The buy up offer never changed ($460 each way & I had planned to buy up at T-30 hours but was pleasantly surprised to get both CPU's

This isn't quite a match for any of the upgrade threads, but here goes...

Mrs. CMCULP and I are both on the same transcon flight today (same fare class but separate PNRs because the outbound dates were different). She is silver, I'm 1K. 4 days ago (theoretically inside my CPU clear window) there were >9 F seats remaining (but R0), so I sponsored her for an upgrade using an RPU.

I cleared (CPU) at 36 hours, at least one other CPU cleared, but she did not. Now we are split, my free upgrade cleared, her supported upgrade pending (but #1 on the list) and F=0. Worse, the 112 mile connection did clear.

1) Why did the CPUs clear ahead of the supported upgrade?
2) How do supported upgrades process when R=0?

(And, what will happen to the RPU apparently burned for a 112 mile regional jet flight? The flight is fully sold out and under gate control, so United tells me they can't back out the upgrade on that segment. The gate will fail as it is UAx...)

1. In theory it shouldn't have happened, but it leads me to think that instead of CPUs coming out of a subset of R they're coming out of a completely different, unpublished bucket that might tie close to R. In this case it seems the CPU bucket was 1+ and nothing went into R.

2. They don't

3. I think you're screwed on the RPU since you couldn't back it out. You can try arguing that the sponsored upgrade should have cleared first per UA's website but you might not get very far.

Snark much? You're a Gold. Three levels of upgrades are above you - doesn't mean they're selling those seats.

My next flight 5/8 #1270 LAX-SFO has been showing R6, and this 1K has been within upgrade window for over 12 hours now. Of course, the only thing I can do now is wait.

OGG-LAX 5/7 UA1143 - 118 1/2!!! hrs out.
LAX-LAS 5/8 UA 566 - 95 2/3 hrs out.

Both myself and Ms. 1K-COURTESY-OF-MM-MATCH-TRASH.

OGG-LAX last two times were cleared much later, even though similar # of seats were available.

Hawaii flights east clear 24 hours early (it is a glitch having to do with the time difference west of the continental US).

You mean they don't clear in advance - check. But they appear at the top of the heap at the gate. Except in this case, they didn't.
