Due to the length of concourse B, a connection under an hour when the arriving or departing flight is a UA mainline aircraft, is not advised. If you arrive on the far west end and depart on the far east end, then allowing for the time it takes deboard the plane, and the 20 minute cut off when UA starts to cancel seat assignments, you are unlikely to make your connection. Of course sitting in the front of the arriving plane helps as does having no green tagged bags.

However, if both aircraft are United Express, then a 45 minute connection is acceptable because all United Express flights arrive and depart on the east end of concourse B. Due to construction some United Express flights are utilizing concourse A which requires a transfer via train.

The flight isn't until May so there's no urgency, despite me already worrying about it!
Thanks again.
Reporting back...
United wouldn't change the flight.

The flight from IAD to DEN landed about 30 minutes early meaning that he had over an hour to make the connection at Denver rather than the 37 minutes showing on the itinerary. All ended well and he arrived in St. George as planned - he even had time for a beer at Denver!
Thanks to all for your advice/comments.

Qick DEN question

have a ticket to PHX via DEN. UA changed schedule, they can't get me out before the next day. Thinking of taking SW. How long to get from UA gates to SW and would I have to go thru security again or is it all airside?

I can't comment on the time, but looking at the terminal map, there's no need to go through security. It does involve a train to go to the other terminal, however, so it would likely depend on how well you can hit the train schedule.

I'd previously booked a ticket PSP-DEN-MSP in December. When I booked the ticket, the connection time in DEN was 51 minutes. However, with subsequent schedule changes (which I've not yet accepted), the connection time is now only 34 minutes. Both flights are mainline UA, not UX.

I checked united.com just now for possible itineraries from PSP to MSP on that day. It shows the flights I'm now on with the 34-minute connecting time, so UA must think that's a legal connection? The "risky connection" icon does not appear for that itinerary, although it does appear for an alternative (PSP-SFO-DEN-MSP) that involves a 31-minute connection in DEN.

The itinerary I'm currently on would (if successful) get me to MSP by 1pm, and there's no other itinerary that would get me to MSP earlier than 4pm. My original aim when booking the trip had been to get to MSP no later than 3pm.

Given all this - Should I be worried about having only a 34-minute connection time in DEN; and, if so, would I have a legitimate case to ask United to move my flights to the previous day, since no other routing can get me to MSP as early as I need to get there?

I'd love to know. United offered - and I booked w/o looking closely enough - a 30-minute connection in DEN going MKE-DEN-SFO. Not sure I'm thrilled with that.

That DEN-SFO flight isn't the last one of the day, so we could still get out that day, maybe. Should I just bite the bullet and change that leg?

Since you are connecting mainline to mainline, you should be fine. My concern would be overhead bin space though.

Is the flight from MKE mainline or express? If express and you gate check a bag, I would be concerned. Checking a bag might be better in this case.

This is an older post likely overtaken by events, but just for informational purposes:

-- Connection is airside, no need to reclear security
-- United goes from Terminal B, Southwest from Terminal C. There is an underground shuttle train between them, no option for walking. The trains run about every few minutes during peak times, maybe every 5 or more late (9pm or later).

Mainline-to-mainline. We'll have to check one bag anyway. Maybe we check the bags we normally carry on so they don't slow us down in DEN, plus the odds that there's space by the time we board are tiny.

This weekend's sked changes cut my BWI-DEN-YVR connection to 42 minutes, in January. I don't have anything pressing the next day in Vancouver, so I'm going to live dangerously and keep these flights. There are two flights a day to YVR, plus connections via SFO and PDX or SEA if they want to add an AC leg in the event of IRROPS.

Mainline-Mainline helps- RJs are horrible here for ontime and being remote out in the 80s, but when I have done MSP on a Airbus jet, it was out of the low gates. You get a high gate arrival, and you are looking at a pretty good walk.

To me, 34 minutes is nothing. You get a slight delay, a slow jet bridge driver, towards the back of the plane... Don't pack anything in that checked bag you need that night..

UAs MCT time are pure fantasy. In these days of full flights, I pad my connections. For TATLs and TPACs, I like to have a flight between the one I'm taking and one that will get me there just in time incase the first goes crazy.

I do have to say, that mainline flights and even RJs have been better in and out of DEN in the last 12 months.

Shortest possible connex in DEN - intl. to domestic

Haven't connected in DEN for 15 years, but will do so next week. Hence my question:

What is the shortest ("all stars aligned") connection time off the Lufthansa MUC-DEN flight and transferring to a regional flight?

I have aligned some stars already: flying in F, so I should come out quickly. I have Global Entry, so I should go through immigration quickly. I have no luggage, so more time saved. I am a fast walker.

What I don't know:
  • Coming from an international flight, will I exit in the main terminal building?
  • And go through securtiy in the main building, or in the B concourse?
  • Not sure if my TSA Pre works (has never worked so far...), so is there a Priority line wherever I need to go through security?
  • Any hints for the quickest way to the regional departure gates which are at the far end of the B concourse?

If the MUC flight lands on time, this will only leave me 55 minutes connection time. But often the MUC flight arrives early, leaving me around 1hour 15 minutes for a connection. Would that work?

It's all in the same building. International passengers walk across the bridge from the A concourse into customs at the north side of the terminal. You'll exit and see the north side security right in front of you (and once you get past all the people greeting loved ones). This checkpoint has Precheck, premium, and Clear lanes. You'll then take the train to the B concourse. If you're in F (didn't think LH had any F from DEN anymore, but I could be wrong), have Global Entry, and it all goes well, you could probably do pretty well. An hour is probably more than fine under those circumstances, but there's always a risk...

There's also a security checkpoint upstairs at the bridge, but it doesn't have Precheck, and once you get across the bridge back to A, you'll still have to go all the way to the basement to catch a train to B anyway, so it's not in your interests to use that checkpoint.

If you're flying UAX, you'll be in the high number B gates, and there's no other way to get there quickly other than to take the walkways and to move fast!

Is this on a single ticket, or did you purchase multiple tickets?

55 minutes is an illegal connection for an LH-UA flight at DEN. The posted minimum is 1 hour and ten minutes. (It's one hour exactly for international to domestic, regardless of airline; LH-UA has its own rule). If you are on a single ticket, the ticketing carrier should fix this in advance. Their default response will likely be to put you onto the next UA flight to your destination. However, they may be flexible and allow you to change routings if you ask (if that helps).

If you have multiple tickets -- one to DEN, and one to your destination -- LH is under no obligation to accommodate you if your flight to DEN is delayed (beyond any EU 261 compensation), and UA is not obligated to transport you if you arrive at the gate after the posted cutoff (although, in practice, they seem to do so).

I have aligned some stars already: flying in F, so I should come out quickly. I have Global Entry, so I should go through immigration quickly. I have no luggage, so more time saved. I am a fast walker.

What I don't know:

If everything goes as planned and you keep moving you will be fine. Be sure to go to the PreCheck line because that is where the most risk is.

At many US airports I have been through Global Entry and customs in less than 5 minutes only to be stuck in security with no PreCheck for 25!
