Due to the length of concourse B, a connection under an hour when the arriving or departing flight is a UA mainline aircraft, is not advised. If you arrive on the far west end and depart on the far east end, then allowing for the time it takes deboard the plane, and the 20 minute cut off when UA starts to cancel seat assignments, you are unlikely to make your connection. Of course sitting in the front of the arriving plane helps as does having no green tagged bags.

However, if both aircraft are United Express, then a 45 minute connection is acceptable because all United Express flights arrive and depart on the east end of concourse B. Due to construction some United Express flights are utilizing concourse A which requires a transfer via train.

My own preference is to fly east->DEN->west coast over connecting in ORD (or IAH). My last several flights have had 35-45 min connecting times in DEN. Have not missed a connection so far. One flight flew through bad weather coming into DEN, but we were not significantly delayed. YMMV.

Thanks!
I recently went through DEN with 30' layover:
SMF -> DEN
DEN -> STL
We arrived 8 minute late. I had to wait for my carry-on to be delivered to the jet bridge. I then sprinted from gate B27 to gate B84. It probably took me 6-8 minutes. I arrived on time, being almost the last time to board (10' prior to departure)
Another passenger who was with me from SMF and going to STL also made it without sprinting. I had told the agent at the STL gate that she was coming which might have helped.

So, 35' will be enough depending on the actual time of the layover (when you get off the plane and are in the terminal) and where the other gate is located (which you can't know until the day of travel).

Best of luck.

Tight connections are fine in DEN. It's not like ORD or IAD, etc. where some flights are in a different concourse or a long walk. Everything UA is in B, and you can get from one end to the other pretty quickly.

But with any tight connection, I always monitor all segments and all options from the day before. Even if I'm not SDC'ing I take a look at what my options are. Is there an earlier IND-DEN flight? Is the DEN-SFO the last flight there that night? Know your itinerary and all the options and you've got it covered.

Good luck.

I often have tight connections in DEN & find it generally do-able, even though it seems I'm always arriving at gate 86 and departing from gate 16. As noted above, United seems to schedule some fluff in their DEN arrival times.

One bit of advice - avoid gate checking your bag if you can - the DEN bag handlers are ridiculously slow getting bags off the plane & onto the ramp.

35 mins is cutting it very close. It all depends on how quickly you can deplane and where your arrival gate is. If you're going UX-UA mainline and have to wait for gate check bags or going from the UX dungeon gates (B80 and higher) to B18 then I'd only give you 50/50 odds.

One thing to note is that hub-to-hub flights usually depart from gates closest to the center of the B concourse and near the United Club entrances- gates B32-40ish. UX almost exclusively uses the higher number B gates B48-92.

Should be alright. All IND-DEN flights currently are mainline, so it'll come in somewhere between 15-47 and leave from one of those gates as well. You wont have to wait for a gate check bag either. Assuming its pretty close to on time, there shouldn't be any issues making that connection.

If it's a mainline IND-DEN, you have a chance. A high gate (80+) RJ flight and a DEN-SFO by the low gate UC will be an issue- especially since RJs flights get pushed a lot and the bags can take 10-15 to arrive if you gate checked them.

The full length of Terminal B is about 3300 feet or 1 kilometer. Even allowing for the need to be at the gate 15 minutes prior to scheduled departure and 10-15 minutes to get off the plane that's still a total of 45 minutes to make a connection assuming one walks rather slowly for the full terminal hike.

Maybe no time to visit a lounge, but making the connection should be fine.

Note to Mods: Maybe make this a wiki and see if others will start something similar for the other UA hubs?
Thank you for your very informative post ^ and I've added it to the wiki for this thread

30M layover in Denver?

Hello there! I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct thread, so forgive me if this is out of place.

So I booked my tickets from Madison to San Francisco through CheapoAir. Apparently there's been a change in my flight and my return trip back to Madison will involve a 30 minute layover at Denver. Is this doable? How far apart are the gates for United at Denver? If I miss my flight then will United place me on another one or will I have to pay for a separate flight?

Thanks!

Gates in DEN can be somewhat far apart (the United terminal is a big long corridor that can take 5-10 minutes to traverse if your gates are spaced away from one another).

More importantly, 30 minutes is a risky proposition in any airport - remember you have to de-plane and then get to your new gate 15 minutes prior to departure time, so you really only have a 15 minute cushion.

If this was a schedule change, I would call United and ask if there are better options - if they changed the time of one of your flights by any appreciable amount, they should be willing to rebook you with a better connection.

If you stick with this and you miss your flight back to Madison, United will get you on another flight eventually; you won't have to pay for another flight (this assumes your original ticket is all on United and not separate tickets - I have no idea how cheapoair tickets work, so look and see if this is all on one United ticket).

Was on a late arriving flight today and the guy next to me and I struck up a conversation on connection times. We both agreed with United the way it is now, the only real connection time is about two hours. Anything less than that is an absolute crap shoot.

I think that will be a mainline to mainline flight, but that still doesn't mean that they will be close together.

United might not have a lot of options to Madison, but they should be able to get you out of San Francisco to either Denver or Chicago and get you to Madison better than a 30 minute connection wil.

Thanks so much for the reply.

I just made a call to CheapoAir but I have a sneaking suspicion that they outsource they calls.

Anyway, they said that it would be the airlines responsibility to put me on a connecting flight. I'm not sure what you mean by saying that both flights are on one ticket, but if you're referring to my flight from SF to Denver, Denver to Madison, then yes this was booked as one 'package' form United Airlines.

Unfortunately, I booked this through CheapoAir. I called them and they said it would cost another $200 if I wanted them to change my flights. They then tried reassuring me by saying that the United flights are all in one terminal.

I really don't mind being put on a later flight. I'll only be having one small carry-on, so luggage isn't much of an issue. I just really don't want to have to fork out money if I miss my flight.
