Due to the length of concourse B, a connection under an hour when the arriving or departing flight is a UA mainline aircraft, is not advised. If you arrive on the far west end and depart on the far east end, then allowing for the time it takes deboard the plane, and the 20 minute cut off when UA starts to cancel seat assignments, you are unlikely to make your connection. Of course sitting in the front of the arriving plane helps as does having no green tagged bags.
However, if both aircraft are United Express, then a 45 minute connection is acceptable because all United Express flights arrive and depart on the east end of concourse B. Due to construction some United Express flights are utilizing concourse A which requires a transfer via train.

that said, I've done 35-40 connections multiple times from United Express flights to mainline. You just have to move fast. Luckily all UA flights are on one (lengthy as somebody else pointed out) concourse. So you just have to know where you're going and run. If the flight is significantly delayed from IAD, though, there will be problems. As long as it's on time or early you're fine.

Flights to St. George are UX (commuter) planes. It is a long walk from the mainline gates to the commuter aircraft gates, which are at the far end of a very lengthy concourse, then down a level, and then another long walk. 37 minutes isn't enough time to make this if there is the slightest delay from IAD.

Well we didn't book this one. The originally booked flight had about 80 mins at Denver. Is there any point at all in phoning United and asking for him to be swapped onto the earlier flight from the UK, or would this just be a waste of time? The flight was booked through the United website, not via a travel agent.

Looks like a late-afternoon flight out of IAD connecting to the last flight of the day to SGU. Not good. I would change it.
If LAS (Las Vegas) is an option, there's a much better connection out of IAD to a nonstop that arrives around 9:30 pm. It's a much longer drive, but hey, the speed limits are really high out there...

Yes, the B terminal is long but it's all continuous and does not require any trains or buses. A fit person can easily walk/jog the entire length in 5-10 mins.
Other point is UA is notorious for generously padding their schedules and flights often arrive 10-15 min early. Weather should not be an issue.
If your brother is sitting anywhere near the front and can quickly deplane and get moving to the connecting gate then it's very possible.

I tend to err on the conservative side, but you're right...he should make it as long as the IAD-DEN flight is on time.

If I understood the original post, United made a change to the flights booked--so you should be entitled to request a change with no fees.

Have very limited experience of connecting in DEN - have only got stuck there once but that's a while ago now.
Would appreciate UA flyers' thoughts on the following connection (this would be on a weekday in Feb):

- no issues with this connection, both flights on time
- gates were close to each other, so was left with at least 30min extra
- the only issue was with McDonald's: I paid extra for a hash brown, but noticed at the gate this was missing from my order (ok, probably healthier this way...)
Good experience with UA (SkyWest) and DEN airport. ^
