Well no-one forced them to make statements like this, so if they get hoist by their own petard, that's their issue:
Hundreds of doctors and scientists attack Boris Johnson over ‘criminal’ plan for ‘Freedom Day’ More than 1,200 leading doctors and scientists have signed a letter condemning Boris Johnson’s decision to forge ahead with so-called Freedom Day on 19 July, describing it as “unscientific and unethical”. Last week, a coalition of medical experts published a missive in medical journal The Lancet, branding the government’s plans “dangerous and premature”. It described Mr Johnson’s strategy as “herd immunity by mass infection” and said that opening the country should be delayed until “everyone, including adolescents, have been offered vaccination and uptake is high”. The letter has now been signed by 1,246 doctors and scientists from all over the world. Former chief scientific adviser and chair of Independent Sage, Sir David King, threw his support behind the letter and described the government’s strategy as “completely wrong”. He told the Daily Express: “It is unbelievable that the UK government should embark on a herd immunity strategy that will see thousands of unnecessary deaths and severe long-term illness when so much progress has been made with the vaccination programme. “As we have said for over a year this strategy is completely wrong and does not reflect the best scientific or medical advice.” One of the highest death rates in the developed world, let’s not go all back slapping self congratulation quite yet. |

Maybe not, but if things had turned (even more) sour post July 19 you know the scientists would of been queuing up to lay the boot in. I’m no Bojo fan, but he deserves some credit. While every other country/leader opens up and bottles it the second they get a surge rather than reach a peak, Bojo (for whatever intention) stuck to his guns and, so far, it has paid off. Even this mask issue the media made a huge deal about hasn’t really been an issue. SkyNews must be praying for the next variant.
If I was a citizen of another European nation right now, I’d be asking why they aren’t following the U.K. he is a clown who cannot make any actual decision re lockdowns or border controls which has been shown time and time again. but i really do not want to drag this in to that arena. i just think more could have been done and more presently, more should be done wrt travel controls given the ham-handedness that we have endured the last 18 months and the allegedly world-beating vaccine program. |

With our early release, BJ took a gamble, knowing it was a gamble. We all hope it comes off, and it looks as though it will. But it might be a good idea to hold off the back-slapping for a while, this virus has a way of coming back and biting the careless on the bum. |

What an utter mockery this is making of the doom predicted by scientists before July 19. I think it was the day before where 1200 scientists signed a letter begging Boris to hold back.
Hopefully some other countries follow now. They all seem to see the quick rise of cases under Delta and bring back restrictions before letting it peak. In think all 5 predictions made are still justifiable. My opinion - I'm sure everyone will end up with covid antibodies (either from the virus or the vaccine) and all countries will have a covid surge as the restrictions are removed, but I still think it's better to wait until everyone who wants to be vaccinated can be fully vaccinated before removing all NPI's. Other countries (none of which have a perfect track record but I'm sure are certainly always watching for what works elsewhere) have not yet decided to go for Englands 'let it rip' strategy. I'm in Prague this week - I have to wear a FFP2 mask in public indoor spaces and show either a negative test or vaccination to get into restaurants, nightclubs etc. It's not a big deal. |

As for restrictions... masks. Their enforcement has been pathetic throughout, it's been stupid to ditch them at this point and they're proven to save lives. I'd rather everyone wore them for a little longer, even if it makes them a wee bit uncomfortable. The good of the collectivity and so on. Then there's the utter stupidity of nightclubs, but we've been round that buoy before. |

Daily data:
Cases 29,312 (27,734 last Wednesday) Deaths 119 (91) Patients admitted 668 (825 on the 24th) Patients in hospital 5,896 (6,021 on the 27th) Patients in ventilation beds 887 (848 on the 27th) People vaccinated up to and including 03 August 2021: First dose: 46,928,033 Second dose: 38,733,334 The rolling seven day daily average for cases is now down 13.7% on the previous week and the same measure for deaths is up 14.5%. The rolling 7 day daily average for deaths is 81.4 today. At last we see a drop in the hospitalisation figures. |
I will do my occasional update on recent trends.
So for the confirmed infection rate per 100,000 populate today we are on: 7 day cumulative = 275.9 - a week ago was 319.5 14 day cumilative = 595.5 - a week ago was 819.3 7 day over 14 day is 46.34% Now that last figure has been rising slightly for the last 5 days. It's still a respectable speed of reduction, we were on that figure for much of February for example, as we pulled out of Alpha, but it does suggest the pace of reduction is slowing down somewhat. What has happened is that though rates are declining in places like Leeds and Birmingham, which I've highlighted before, nevertheless Delta cases are rising in some places. Bournemouth is one such place, where they seem to be having a double peak. We've seen that before - the virus cycles around one group of people, they get over it, cases come down, but some a separate cycle of peole then get infected 10 days later. Sheffield is another example of this (and more worrying since vaccination levels are lower than Bournemouth, plus it's bigger). Fortunately these are exceptions, the big cities of Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester, Belfast are all seeing reduced cases and reduced hospital cases. But Delta remains a threat to middle sized towns and cities. |

Cases 30,215 (31,117 last Thursday) Deaths 86 (85) Patients admitted 727 (932 on the 25th) Patients in hospital 5,686 (6,034 on the 28th) Patients in ventilation beds 881 (853 on the 28th) People vaccinated up to and including 04 August 2021: First dose: 46,926,330 Second dose: 38,874,837 The rolling seven day daily average for cases is now down 10.4% on the previous week and the same measure for deaths is up 14.4%. The rolling 7 day daily average for deaths is 81.6 today. The fall in cases does appear to have plateaued over the last few days. I recall the same thing happening after the last wave, only for the fall to resume after a few days. I am not making any predictions here because that is asking for trouble, but we can hope for a similar outcome. |
The Telegraph is reporting today on 'rip off' travel testing costs:
Travel tests have been condemned as a "rip-off" by MPs as it emerged that holidaymakers are paying the equivalent of £100,000 for each sequenced test.... The front page is just about readable here: https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cp...1-a001c-dt.png And in other news, the Daily Mail reports that government minister Alok Sharma has flown to 30+ countries in the last 7 months, 6 of them red and has not quarantined once. A few days after visiting red list Bangladesh he met with Prince Charles and visited a primary school. Six red-list countries in a world tour of 30 nations… but NO Covid quarantine: Climate minister Alok Sharma repeatedly uses Crown exemption to dodge isolation rules other travellers have to follow |
