If it's any consolation to you all, Switzerland has vaccinated just over 600,000 (400,000 with both shots) ..... since they started in January. They're still on "over 75 years old" and I'm now having to irritatingly ignore the NHS asking me to register for my vaccine as I'm over 50.

Two return flights ... each return requiring potentially four PCR tests to be paid for (although could be down to two or three if timed well), isolation in the UK, isolation on the return ... I'm debating it but the easy option is to just wait it out.

Hundreds of thousands of doses. It's a bit like making a huge vat of liquid sourdough bread, you have a starter (from a previous batch) and grow the vaccine in a big tank over time, then it gets checked by AZ, then by PHE. They can sometimes rectify it if it's slighly out tolerance, but I'm speculating whether this is the cause.
When is the Moderna vaccine due, can this help make up the shortfall?

I'm also interested in what is going on with Moderna - I thought it was coming online this month?

Sounds like a delay on Moderna has put the breaks on.

That suggests that the problem is with AZ production outside the UK but being imported for domestic use (e.g. AZ in the EU or India). AZ in the UK and Pfizer have both said this evening that they expect to deliver as planned. Maybe just a bit of expectation management / don't over do it with the 40s since we have the second doses to do. Or indeed Moderna.

I think HMG will have to say more about the sudden change as Hancock's answer wasn't really an answer and it's front page news all over the UK press.
According to the Telegraph, there will be a shortage of 5 million doses in April due to issues with AZ production in India resulting in a 4 week delay.

[India sounds more plausible, since that's Joint Venture rather than central AZ but this would have been extra to current throughput].

It's still not adding up very well. Every vaccine I have administered was made in Puurs, Keele, Oxford or Wrexham, none of which are apparently under suppy shortage. They are clearly able to produce a decent wadge of vaccines every week, as witnessed by this week, so something is missing here. The source of this story was a letter within the NHS, reporting on what they were told by the arms-length Vaccines Taskforce, the writers don't know the details and tha Taskforce keeps their cards closed to their collective chests.

Well that explains why all the appointments in April have disappeared.
I had been keeping a close eye hoping to book Mrs Wilsnunn (a doctor currently on maternity leave) as soon as our 10 day self isolation ends towards the middle of April. Prior to today, appointments until 10 April were available in Norwich, checking now it is only 31 March showing as bookable, nothing else.
