Wow, 8 days from application to successful interview - that has to be close to a record

RobbieRunner Jan 26, 2015 12:23 pm

That is fast. I can't remember how long it took me to get through the process, it's been quite a few years ago. My Card is set to expire in about 18 months, so I have to get on that when it gets within 1 year.

I found out that if you let your passport expire, you have to go to a Nexus Center to present your new Passport in person - IF YOU WANT TO RETAIN GLOBAL ENTRY status. This is what Nexus Officers told me. So that's what I did.

My nexus card/membership expires in July. Can anyone confirm if I have to be present for an interview to renew for another five years? I can't seem to find specific info regarding this on the GOES website, although I seem to remember hearing the renewal can be done online without a personal interview if there have been no infractions.

My status is a Canadian citizen, living in the US as a legal resident alien (green card holder).

Thanks for any info!

AFAIK, you apply to renew on GOES and it's luck of the draw. I believe some people simply receive their new card in the mail, while others have to schedule an appointment.

Just as a reference point, I received the renewal without having to go through another interview.

Just got treated like absolute $#@&#(&@ at the Ottawa Enrollment Center by a US officer...they really have no clue. I called in earlier and they told me to come in to get rid of part of the name on my card. So I came in, and was then made to feel like a liar when I was telling them that my father's first name is not something that should be on my card (because it's not in my Canadian passport or Canadian Citizenship card...), because I had told them my Russian birth certificate had that name listed - this is actually not a middle name, which they just didn't get... In russian, everyone's full name is first name,, father's first name, then last name. Then they told me I had to go online and apply for a replacement card! What was the point of asking to come in?

And then, when I was trying to reapply online, I had problems with GOES, because it was asking me for proof of Russian citizenship, which I don't even have anymore... So I called into the GOES help line, and the lady was just shocked I got told I need to reapply when I had already gotten the card and passed the interview. She said she would be able to remove my father's name that I don't want on the GOES card, since it will then match the passport exactly, and it is not really a name change per se. She said I would get the card in the mail in 7-10 days. Unbelievable.

I just renewed my passport and updated the info in GOES. Last time I got a new passport, I went in to the NEXUS office to update it as well. I assume it's still necessary to do this, but does anyone know if anything's changed recently?

Ah, good old Russian patronymic names... I'd have thought that the border services agencies would be cultured enough to know about it. Or, at the very least, do some research and realize you weren't jerking them around.

Glad it worked out in the end.

I don't think he knows what "cultured" is. Honestly, he didn't know anything. Didn't know NEXUS holders would be eligible for TSA pre-check. Told me to come in for nothing, then talked to me in an accusatory tone, then told me to reapply online, when in fact this was unnecessary.

So in 5 years, when I reapply, I think I'm not going to mention this patronymic at all if I'm asked what my full name is...because this only makes things more confusing. If this was genuinely a part of my name, I would have to mention it, but the only place it is probably in is a Russian birth certificate (untranslated). I was looking at my father's passport yesterday, and in it, the patronymic is written in Russian, but not translated into English. So the English translation just has first name, last name.

I don't even know why the border officers are not trained on this...

Hi Melissa,

Would highly recommend going in an showing it to them in person when you get a chance. I don't think it's absolutely crucial that you do it immediately, but would make a point to go when you can.

Just don't really ask any questions when you go. When we went in December due to new passports, the guy we dealt with at YYZ was an absolutely jerk.

Hi,
does anyone know how long it takes for the card to be sent? I was approved January 15th and its been 10 business days now. Just wondering since I'm heading on a few trips next week.

Typically it seems about a week. You're at just over 2 weeks now. That does seem kind of unusually long.

Definitely go in. Unless something has changed recently, even though the website says somewhere that updating GOES is good enough, it really isn't. That is a US system which doesn't really update the Canadian side. Plus the Canadian side wants a copy. Over the years, I've always got the same answer...the US side always says GOES is enough, the Canadians always say to bring it in. By doing the quick update in GOES, and then bringing it in for Canada covers your bases either way.

Must be my OCD. got it in the mail tonight

However, not impressed with the quality. Are we in 2000 or something? This feels like a flimsy piece of plastic that comes out of a teenager's printing machine. This is supposedly a secure travel document?! My photo has half my face cropped off.

A normal ontario driver's license has more safety features than this....
