So wow, a huge deterioration in the Nexus re-entry at YYZ. Arriving tonight the lineup was much longer than the regular one. That should have been my clue to avoid. Machines were glitching, not recognizing tap or faces, etc. A significant cohort (myself included) could not get the photo to work so we were all sent for manual processing anyway. I don’t understand why they cannot copy what the Americans do with their GE machines. Facial recognition is not that difficult.

A really stupid question. Is NEXUS permissible for leisure, non-business travel? I have a NEXUS card and I just got into a discussion with someone who is adamant that it is not valid for anything other than business trips without things to declare.

You can certainly use it for any type of travel (except if you need a work visa, etc) as long as you have nothing to declare.

Kids under 18 are eligible, so are 75yo seniors? I don’t think that when they cross land borders on a Saturday morning it is for a business trip!! :)

Inaccurate. I use it for leisure and business. I almost always have something to declare. In fact, at my original interview, I was given a booklet of slips to complete for crossing a land border with goods to declare.

Indeed -- the rules ab:)ut declarations when using NEXUS can be found here.

Hahahaha 🤣 It's amazing how wrong some people can be and yet so absolutely certain that they will defend their opinion to the end. And unfortunately some of those people are CBP officers.

As others have said, NEXUS is definitely valid for leisure travel and with things to declare. We use it exclusively for leisure travel. In fact, at our interview, the CBSA officer asked if we would be using it for business, and I said no.

One additional item, the person might have been confusing it with the APEC travel card, which can only be used for business travel. It is not permitted to be used for personal travel.

Or they got confused about the bit on commercial goods.

How big is the backlog of Nexus card applications now in April 2024? Eighteen months ago it was near 300,000. I haven’t heard or read anything about the backlog size in recent months however. I presume substantial progress has been made?

I've searched this thread but cannot find clear information about the following situation:
  • I am a Canadian citizen and currently a Canadian resident, with a NEXUS membership.
  • Shortly I will cease to be a Canadian resident and will be moving abroad.
  • I know I must update my Canadian postal address (which I can do online), but my residential address (which will be abroad) update must be done at an enrollment centre.
  • I will be returning to Canada and the US for visit friends/family and tourism visits in August-September this year.
My question is this: should I try and prospectively update my residential address before I've moved? I am concerned that if I wait until when I return to Canada and the US in Agust-September, I may be flagged for delay in updating my new residential address. As I am a Canadian citizen, my residential address change will not affect my eligibility for NEXUS. But I've seen information around the web that delay in updating information can trigger some border officers.

Any information on this would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Does NEXUS actually call your employer? My NEXUS membership is up for renewal so I'm filling out the application and trying to figure out what phone number I can give them...

As an side, I've had NEXUS for five years and I love it. Breezing past customs by looking into a camera without having to take anything out of my bag is so cool. TSA PreCheck makes traveling much less stressful. And NEXUS gives you both for less than they cost on their own!

How often do people check their application's status? I applied earlier this month, but haven't bothered to log in to check because of reports of over a year wait for conditional approval. TIA.

While not the literal answer to your question, normally you will receive an email telling you there has been a change of status, at which point you can log in to find out what it is. Of course that doesn’t stop people—myself included—from logging in to check status before receiving said email “just in case”. :p
