No affect. You can renew as early as 364 days before expiration date.

If you renew after expiration, you will not have TSA Pre nor Global Entry until final approval.

Actually, if one applies for renewal after letting their Global Entry membership expire, the new expiration date will be five years from their birthday following the final approval of the application; however, as correctly started, they will not receive from either PreCheck or Global Entry in the interim and conditional approval processing timelines are currently as long as eight months.

Data point.
Aprll 2019, Mrs. jsnydcsa's GE expired
23 August 2020, Applied for Renewal

Still waiting. 199 Days.
Recently received email claiming 7 months or more for processing of GE renewal.

jsnydcsa Mar 9, 2020 11:26 am

Data point
Aug 2020, jsnydcsa Jr. (11 years old) WILL expire
2 or 3 March 2020 - Submitted renewal application
5 March 2020 - Conditional approval - appointment required

NO appointments available in most convenient area (Wash/Balt/Virginia).
Early April 2020 - Appointment in New York. Sked was pretty wide open for early April 2020 in New York.

Approx. 19 Mar 2020 - Email from "CBPO" at Global Entry Enrollment Center at JFK.
"CANCELLATION of Appointment for Global Entry Program
You are receiving this e-mail because your appointment for the Global Entry program at JFK Enrollment Center has been cancelled
Effective March 19, 2020, out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of minimizing exposure and controlling the spread of the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Outbreak, all US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler Program Enrollment Centers will suspend operations until at least May 1, 2020. This temporary closure includes all public access to Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST enrollment locations.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience through this process.

So, that's cancelled...

Also received a separate, more generic email reminding me of options to finalize GE process (with kid) when arriving at certain International Airports. Yeah, um, that's not in the offing.

3 Sept 2020 - Rescheduled appointment. New appointment date at IAD is for 12 January 2021.

12 Jan 2021 - Rescheduled appointment today at IAD. Jr. and self attended. In and out in approx. 45 minutes. Officer was delayed with another non-GE matter and apologized for the delay calling us in for our scheduled time.

12 Jan 2021 - Received email to go to GE/CBP web site. Logged into Jr.'s account. Approval notification/letter in system. Huzzah.

Sorry, I meant if I submit the renewal before the expiration date, and it doesn't get approved until after the expiration date - thus falling into the "waiver" area. Would the expiration be the same as if it got approved before the expiration date?

Same expiration date.

If you do not receive conditional or final approval before expiration date, you have up to one year to complete your renewal from expiration date.

Five years from the previous expiration date. In addition, as long as you applied for renewal before the original expiration date, you will continue to recieve Global Entry benefits for up to a year after the original expiration date pending the final approval of your renewal application.

While I remain in the early stages (~60 days) of what's likely to be the long wait, I'm wondering if there's a difference between first renewals and second renewals.

I'm on my second - first was very quick.

Curious if this plays any role in the pattern . . .

So far two of my trips have been canceled due to the coronavirus, and I am all but certain my Tucson trip (where I have scheduled my renewal interview) will also be a casualty. With so many people being forced to cut back on travel, I wonder if there will be any possibility of CBP extending the renewal deadline? I'd hate to think my Global Entry might expire, but as of the moment it's looking like more and more of a possibility

I assume you mean the time for an interview after conditional approval? There's no reason corornvirus would prevent anyone from submitting a renewal application, regardless of travel, and getting in the queue.

As for interviews, I would guess not - I think CBP assumes people wanting to (re)enroll will be willing and able to go to one of the enrollment centers. They might, however, show some flexibility in cases where there is no nearby enrollment center and they're available only with travel. I'd guess that will be case by case, not universal (for example, I live in Washington DC and would not need an extension for any interview, so long as the offices remain open).

Given the lengthy wait times at many of the enrollment centers and the marked decrease in both business and leisure travel the pandemic is likely to cause over the next few months, that's a bad assumption on the part of CBP. I'm certainly not the only person who has to travel to reach an enrollment center, and most of the locations that are within a day's drive of where I live have few or no appointments available. How can I go in for my interview if it's literally impossible for me to schedule one, much less complete it, before my current Global Entry expires?

Once you have received the conditional approval, you have a full year from the date of the conditional approval to complete the enrollment interview. The interview can be rescheduled as many times as necessary. As long as the renewal application was made before the original expiration date, you will continue to recieve Global Entry benefits pending the final approval of the renewal application for up to a year after the original expiration date. Many renewal applications are approved without the need for an interview.

Mine, alas, requires an interview. But it's good news that if necessary I can delay the interview past the point of my Global Entry expiration in February 2021, because it may be necessary to do so (and not just because of a shortage of appointment slots; I fully expect my hospital to severely restrict employee travel in the very near future due to the pandemic).

Website to check? It’s been seven months

Hi!

Somewhere in this thread people posted the website where one could check-in on a renewal application that has been waiting for review for over five months. Could someone repost that site? Better could that info be added to the wiki? In2ishn-2 has been waiting since 8/14/2019

Thank you!

Thank you but that’s not it. I have that bookmarked and well-used. At one time someone posted a link that took one to a link where one could send in a complaint/inquiry if the wait had been over five months. I guess I will have to just take the time to go through the pages to find it. Let’s hope it still works
