Get out of the States more often. I'd say that about 90% of the hotels I stay in have at least a VCR, but more often a DVD player (although I know of one that has a Philips CD-i player in each room - what a waste).

I once stayed in a "Motel" in Brazil - You don't want to know what the amenities were.

Obviously, each individual will place a different value on the amenities that are found in a hotel room. Why can't frequent stay programs store each individual's preferences in their profile so that upon their next visit, the hotel room can be stocked as per the preferences of the individual? Sure it would cost a little more in time and products, but wouldn't a hotel like to provide that extra something to a frequent stay guest? Just my two cents...

Actually, Wyndham does some of that with their Wyndham By Request. You fill out a questionnaire as to what your peference is (F/Q/K bed, non-allergenic pillows, etc.) and also ask what sort of welcome package you'd like -- cookies, soda, water, beer/wine, etc.

Not a bad deal.

A shower with very good water pressure. It amazes me that at some of the better hotels how bad the water pressure is. For $150.+ per night I expect excellent water pressure!
I think I'll start bringing a little wrench with me so can take that water restrictor out of the showerhead!

scissors, since we can't carry these on anymore.

Humidifier would be great as well, plus staplers, tape.

and mouthwash.

I want more easily accessable electrical outlets too, but the main thing I want, that no one has mentioned yet is a refrigerator and a microwave. Also, minibars have been an absolute lifesaver many times when checking in late at night.

If you want a fridge and microwave, most extended stay places and Marriott Residence Inn's and Towneplace Suites have them.

IMO if you need a fridge and microwave, a regular hotel is probably not the place to stay at.

Ditto to all the requests for accessable electrical outlets. Most hotels were built long before we all started traveling with so many toys to plug in.

I've found multiple uses for the shower caps, but never use in the shower.

Not sure if it would be considered an amenity, but when in a strange city, it is often difficult to determine your "local" calling area from the info in the phone book. It would be nice for the hotel to provide the prefixes considered "local" in the phone section of the guest book (I use AOL and it can be a shock to find out you have a big long distance bill for what you thought was a local call).

I am astutely aware of this. I always prefer to stay at a suite type hotel. However, they are not always available in an acceptable location or are overpriced because they have full kitchens and separate bedrooms. Many regular hotels do offer fridge/microwaves, and to me, it is much more important than what brand of soap is in the bathroom, etc.

I understand. I just think that for most customers of the regular full service hotels, a fridge and microwave would be so under-utilized that it would probably not make economic sense from the hotel's point of view to have them in the room.

But it would be nice to have them, if it doesn't impact the room rates

I think that I get out of the states a fair amount. In the past year, I have stayed at:

Westin Palace Madrid
Park Hyatt Villa Magna Madrid
Best Western Atlantico Madrid
Marriott London (forget which one)
Hilton Rome Airport
Hilton Athens
Hotel D'Europe Nice
Westin Europa & Regina Venice

I do not recall any of these hotels having VCRs or DVD players in the room. I was not looking for one, and if it was well hidden, I could have missed it. However, one was not placed next to the TV, where I would assume it would be if available.

I wish more hotels had real desk chairs with adjustable seat positions and heights.
