I'm a little late to the game and was not able to use Flight Track before Mobiata got acquired. I've been reading this thread and I don't really understand what made Flight Track so special that people are still sad about losing it some three years later.
In the most simple terms, can someone please explain to me what you were getting out of FlightTrack that none of the other apps are offering...what problem did Flight Track solve so well? And why was it so important that Flight Track worked with Tripit?

I’ve been so disappointed with all the alternatives that I’ve hacked together a FlightTrack like clone to give me all the data in one place. It looks ugly, but i don’t need to open multiple ugly apps to get all my flight info when I travel.

This is critical with Tripit because when I have a trip added in tripit, as I go through security, I open FlightTrack to quickly check the gate # and any delays to my flight. I don't need 50 advertisements for lounges, drink coupons, hotel offers, boarding pass links, weather, etc (I'm looking at you, Appintheair) - I _just_ need my flight, gate, any delays, the equipment flying it and a seatmap link.
It was a very simple app but it was perfect for the busy traveller. It didn't try to do 56 things: it did a half dozen, but very clearly and well.

FlightTrack allowed a VERY quick lookup of flights: there was a very easy way to type in from, to airports and get a list of flights between them. It's a really simple function that is totally missing in most apps today. Don't need connections, codeshares, etc: just unique flights between two airports. Of course, it also provided actual departure / arrival times, so delays and so on were shown. Gates were shown. Total flight time was shown

I loved being able to clearly see the scheduled departure and current departure, as well as being able to quickly navigate to seeing pushback, takeoff, landing, and gate arrival times (great for somene like me who likes keeping a flight log). It was just so easy and straightforward to navigate.
Now I miss this again

And I liked seeing the arrival and departure boards at the airports. An added value feature but handy when figuring out inbound aircraft.
Like @PSuedo-Nim said upthread, a nice collection of some genuinely useful tools that don't exist elsewhere.

Or what airplane at LAX/ORD was blocking my gate preventing us from pulling into it for 45 minutes. Although this was a separate add on (for like $3) wasn't it?

For me personally the replacement has been https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-...533365777?mt=8, which I tried for a few months before finally taking the plunge and getting the pro version, https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-...499826209?mt=8.
the UI is not quite as simple as FT, but it syncs perfectly with Tripit, syncs to my iCloud calendar, sends the same kinds of push notifications, etc. Even has the same icon, lol. Paid version removes the ads. The codeshare scrolling can get annoying but honestly I don't spend that much time in the app itself for it to bother me that much.

You're right: this is absolutely the best second choice. As an added benefit, it has a map of flight routes between airports feature that's a sort-of decent replacement for FlightConnections.com which costs a fortune to use these days so I no longer use it. Thanks for the reminder!

Hi community,
I'm the developer of the replacement app some of you liked and sadly disappeared last summer. The app has been back in the store for a couple months now with new logo and new name: "FlightStatus". Design stayed the same and I am currently working on Push Notifications and TripIt integration. The App costs $5, but does not come with any subscriptions, or other hidden costs.

Got it today. My feedback so far: it has a pleasant UI and fits my use-cases. Doesn’t have gate info for my flight today SIN-BKK. App in the Air does have my gate info.
my annual App In The Air subscription is up next month. Hopefully my missing gate info for today’s flight is an anomaly or can be ironed out.
