Hey Tell
Not sure if this has been suggested in this thread yet, but I just discovered Hey Tell. It gives a "Nextel Connect" type experience on the iPhone via your data connection (EDGE, 3G or Wifi) so it doesn't cost anything extra to use. Very neat to play with. Certainly not always the most practical way to communicate, but comes in handy at times.
Its FREE as well (although there are add-ons which they charge for). THe only add-on that seems worth anything at all is a "groups" feature which lets you setup groups to send messages to simultaneously. However for $2.99 I'm not biting. |
FlightCaster Pro now free
I'm not sure it's a favorite, as I've just downloaded it, but nbevan has just reported in the AA Forum that FlightCaster Pro is available for free at the moment, so I thought I'd share it here:

A good time to download the FlightCaster iPhone app, as it is currently free (following a takeover by Next Jump Inc.).

FlightCaster Pro is still available at no cost...I just loaded it onto my iPhone and discarded the existing non-Pro version.

Anyone tried World Customs & Cultures? Free app for the iPhone, lots of good info in it.

WindowSeat
WindowSeat is a great app - you enter departure and arrival cities and departure time, it displays a terrain map, points of interest, progress along the flight path and time to arrival.
WindowSeat includes an extensive POI database including interesting POI facts, comprehensive flight path data and terrain maps. I now check WindowSeat before requesting seat assignments to see which side of the plane I want to sit on. The app takes only 57 MB, loads instantly and is rock solid. It costs $7 but well worth the money for any air traveler and especially frequent travelers like most of us who are interested in what we are seeing from 30,000+ feet. |

So the maps are cached, not streamed? Would have to be, since on a plane, you're not likely to have Internet access. GPS lock may be tough without data though.
How would this app work? |

Stuck in your seat app
I like the new "Stuck in Your Seat" app on itunes. It gives exercises to do when you are sitting on the plane. Not a workout but definitely helps stretch you out. It also has a place for itineraries..good mulititasking.

Lonely Planet guides are free during Snowmageddon
US and Canadian cities are free downloads right now. Get 'em while the snow is sticking.

News Corp and Apple unveiled The Daily today which is the first iPad exclusive "newspaper" app. There is only one day of content available though I have to say I am impressed with the idea and most of the writing. I would describe the writing style and content to be more mature than the NY Post though behind the WSJ. With that said, the actual app could use a little more work as it just lags in some places. Still though the content looks quite nice and I like the idea they are going for and how it really does flow together nicely as if a magazine/tabloid evolved to the digital age -- its almost Harry Potter-ish in some cases. The first two weeks are free so I guess I will keep on trying it out to see if they can maintain the content and integration before I make a decision on whether or not to subscribe.
