I use grid.org ... its similar to Folding@home except Grid.org helps find cures for cancer. I am on the Avsim Team. If you are unfamililiar as to who AVSIM is they are the ones that provide free addons for FS2004 and others.

latest update
Guys, we're really making progress. Added 3 new members I see (welcome!), and we're also making strong upward movement through the 700's of team rankings. I imagine we will do so similarly until the 500's, at which point we will hit a ceiling. That is, without much more FT'rs participating. I've always felt this was a high yield board: individuals who controlled a nice amount of high end personal pc's & laptops, plus also same or higher control of business computers. Add to this other borrowed ones... and it's big. But the biggest part of the equation is signing up more ACTIVE members.
Anyhow, here's the update, direct from folding@home. I acutally prefer Statsman (http://www.statsman.info/folding2stats/html/39124.html). I've now made it my first go-to page, as it shows daily numbers, weekly numbers, etc. Thanks for making a difference. SteveinSTL, I'm looking over my shoulder :D I've just started keeping my work machine on 24x7 rather than 8x5 but I expect you will soon take the lead for FlyerTalk. Randy has added one of his machines to the project as well ^ I expect we'll see it soon. |
I'm in, program is downloaded and running. I guess you'll see me show up on the stats in a day or so. I'm running high speed cable at home, so it will be running all day while I'm at work. It's only one PC, but it will help.

I've actually done Folding@Home before, but I rejoined when I saw the TalkMail message. And I just completed my first work unit! :)
|
We are now in the top 2%.

update, welcome, a few questions

Next question: on computers that seem to remove our little program, I've tried using the "no nonsense" non graphical version 5.02. It creates a quick little DOS program that starts the process. Is it necessary to keep open this DOS window to keep F@H running on v5.02? That surely won't work on a public computer! Anyone running 5.02 that can give me some info? Some welcomes: we're now up to 31 members, 111 computers, and we can now be honored to have Randy in our midst, churning away. Hey... you're not going to suddenly fire up the Flyertalk servers to vault you into first place are you?! ;) Some kudos: Percussionking & SNA Flyer - wow, what a week you've had. ^ ^ See you both have substantive computers working,and all are active. Very impressive. The statsman webpage is the best to see relative changes. And speaking of that... Birdstrike & Winkydink... I think we're about to meet! Yet it seems all 3 of us are about to be met by these 2 guys in about 1.5 months or less. Ok, all for now. Here's the latest ranking & results. We're currently team ranked 636, and moving quickly. Keep churning! 1 birdstrike 29835 276 2 WinkyDink 28388 359 3 SteveinSTL-hotels 26694 268 4 FT_User 18588 114 5 percussionking 14968 125 6 OnAMileHigh 10959 122 7 tlglenn 8747 95 8 SNA_Flyer 6570 33 9 nerd 5911 54 10 NickW 5418 30 11 work2fly 4855 62 12 shell_nyc 3614 36 13 SuiJuris 3468 20 14 ScottC 2555 21 15 elCheapoDeluxe 1948 20 16 MapleLeaf 1331 16 17 jumpmonger23 1186 9 18 blindfaith 1095 32 19 AdamK 1027 3 20 jc1k 851 7 21 Chrissxb 783 5 22 rdraper 626 8 23 safarimatt9 603 4 24 roundtheworld 547 6 25 Randy 314 3 26 haveric 241 1 27 EFATO 241 1 28 flagorio 241 1 29 rafatmit 200 4 30 photog72 134 2 31 Stefan0521 77 1 32 rob2507 77 1 |

Then go to the Project Summary page at http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html and look for your project name. It will show how many atoms and how many points the WU is worth. I have noticed that the number of frames is not always what is shown by the F@H application, but it does seem to match the number of frames shown by the logStats tool mentioned in a previous post. So for my current p1310 WU, I can expect 316 points. And knowing that I can conclude that it won't be completing/posting today! |
Yep, birdstrike thanks for finding that prevoius post. My Thinkpad T41 is crunching P1140 for 600 points (about 70 hours total), my Thinkpad T21 is crunching P1591 for 57 points (about 48 hours), and my ancient Toshiba Tecra 8000 is crunching P724 for 63 points (about 350 hours).
Its amazing how much faster the newer machines are at folding! Can't help on the DOS program. I am using the 5.02 Windows client, and not using it as a screen saver. |
I don't know how long I'll be able to keep up with the systems I have. My employer is slowly phasing out several programs, hence the free systems. Don't know how much longer I'll have them around, at least a couple more months.
As far as the "no nonsense" version goes: You can make it run in the background as a Windows Service (only on NT/2000/XP). This means it will start when the system is booted up and will run in the background, even before someone logs in. |
Windows Service
I am running Folding as a Windows Service on one of my machines. As I recall, the installation instructions were unclear or incorrect in a few spots. If you're having problems installing the service, PM me and I'll post the steps that I followed.

We've broken the 600 level! ^
FlyerTalk is now 593 of 36180. |
And just about to crack the 200,000 points barrier as well!
