I'm game to start trying to load this on to shared computers wherever I roam. I saw a few things as I scrolled through referring to installing it as a "service" and other such things that are above my head. Anybody want to post a list of tips - version, where to install, how to run hidden, etc... that they have been successful with so I don't have to try to reinvent the wheel?

I suspect that a lot of the internet cafe/business center type places are probably running Deepfreeze or similar programs that reset the computer to an image after every user. No way around that program that I have heard of.

Soon my children, if all goes well, WUs will be winging in from all over Asia...

For Windows PC's there are two versions that you can install. One is called the Graphical Client (current version os 5.03). The other is called "No Nonsense Text-Only Console" version 5.02. It is the second one that can be installed as a service.

Download the .exe file and run it on the PC. The first time it runs you are prompted for things like the team number (which is 39124 for us), username (mine is FT_User, others are more meaningful). One of the things you are promted for is if you want to run it as a service. If you select yes, it will be added to the list of Services and set to start automatically when the system boots.

When run as a service, there is no icon in the system tray of Windows XP/2000. It shows as a process in the task list.

There is some good background on how it works and how to install at http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html .

this is crushing - I just loaded it up and started crunching - and it says that it is going to take me 8 days and 7 hours to finish my first work unit. And this is on an almost new 2.4gig system. (I guess this is what I get for buying the Celeron.)

I guess I won't be catching birdstrike anytime soon...

Tweaker's Guide

I don't know if this will be of use to anyone or not, but I found this while playing on Google: the F@H Tweaker's Guide.

Some pretty basic stuff for the first part, then jumps quickly to things I don't understand.

I think I got this right, team #39124, I've got 3 computers at home and 7 at my office I should be able to get on there...hopefully we can make a difference!

Too bad this isn't published more in FlyerTalk, I just found it and have been on this forum for months.

Give it a while to settle down. The first few frames often end up with very unrealistic completion estimates. A 2.4GHz CPU should complete even the largest work units in under a week. But my older slower systems (like a 300MHz PII) takes 3 or more weeks to complete a small (63 point) WU and it runs 24 hours a day doing very little else.

95% of my score has come from one PC, my 1.5GHz Pentium M that generally runs 24 hours a day. The other 5% has come from a 800MHz PIII and the 300MHz PII. So you can climb the ladder with a half decent system if you can have it running 24x7.

Great to have you onboard. Another 10 PC's would be a great addition to the team. Yes, Team 39124 is us.

It did manage to get a mention in a recent Talkmail edition, which was fantastic - thanks Talkmail editors ^ .

Gosh, if we could get just 1000 FTers to sign-up :)

SteveinSTL Feb 22, 2005 6:54 pm

into the 400's!

Yup, we made it into the top 400 team grouping with only 37 FT'rs, and many of them since the recent posting in Talkmail. A thousand? I'd be thrilled with 100!

Quick kudos to SNA Flyer, you have consistantly had the highest daily score as seen on statsman link. Whatever you're doing, keep it up. ^ ^ Inversely, my numbers have slipped recently, as many of my previously active hotel computers seem to have stopped. Several I've revisited had the program uninstalled, and i was torn between hotel users (what's up with that...?!) uninstalling and system administrators remotely uninstalling. Now, previous posting about Deepfreeze has me convinced that this will be a perpetual problem for my setup. So, the original idea of "leaving footprints all over the world" will in fact be like them - washed away after a short time. :(

Yet I'll continue adding them. Nashville was good to me recently, and they should come online soon....! Still not sure I can catch Winkydink & Birdstrike before SNA Flyer catches us all, but if it puts us in the top 250 teams, who cares?! ^

Signature line recruiting

Here's my plan for getting the numbers up: I know the automatic signature lines are disabled, but there is nothing to keep you from pasting one into each of the messages that you post in other threads.

Just create it once, make it catchy, save it to a notepad file on your desktop, then paste it onto the end of your messages as you post frequently, in many different forums. As demonstrated below:

:) I'm looking forward to being overtaken ^

We're now team 500 of 36490 and have broken the 250,000 score level!

Great idea, TJQuill, I shall adopt it!

Now we just need a prize for the most creative signature line to inspire some creativity.

But to catch you they both have to get past me first! Time to be a little more creative in finding some more idle PC's ...

I have one more folding occasionally (nearly finished its first WU), but it only spends about 8 hours a week turned on.

We are ranked 499 as I check this morning ^ .

And I'll definately have to think about a creative sig line - good idea.
