I am currently an SPG gold member, which is set to expire in Feb 2019. I have a question, so if I managed to hit platinum status in the next one or two months, will my platinum status be valid only until Feb 2019, because technically during the re qualification cycle at the end of 2018, I hit the required stays for platinum. Should I be expecting my platinum to be valid for the whole of 2019 as well?

We don't really know what will happen in 2019, but in general if you hit Platinum this year, you will get it for the rest of this year, all of next year and until Feb 19, as you mentioned.

If that's the case, would it be wiser for me to hit plat in early 2018, so I can enjoy plat for the rest of 2018 and the whole of 2019 (of course provided SPG is still around)? Do you know how early in the year can I do this? January/February of the year? Or it should be after Feb?

I did the challenge several years ago in late Jan and then had it all that year and the following as well.

Finished last month with 65 nights. Just a few nights at Marriott this month and I'm done for the year.

Its been a slow year for me for both personal and business reasons. Just mad PLT yesterday.

I still need 6 nights to make PLT-50 (which I have done for the last 4 years). I hope that I can make that happen.

I just checked -- at 98 nights, and I have two more nights scheduled 11-13 Dec. Curious if Ambassador will exist in 100; mine has been irrelevant on a lot of my easy bookings, but on the more complex or international ones, has been worth maybe 100k points. (so, worth 10-30 days of mattress run over 75). Fortunately didn't need to do that.

I just made it! First time since 2006. Wow. It's good to be back. I also hit 50 nights, so I get my choice of the 50 night award and really am at a loss as to what to pick. My first instinct was to go with the 5 elite qualifying nights since I feel like this year was an anomoly and requalifying again next year may be a challenge, but if the program is something else that may be a waste of a gift. Decisions.

Currently at 97 and contemplating whether to mattress run to 100 knowing that my last 12 stays didn't net a single suite upgrade

I just hit 52 last week, so I'm back for 2018. ASFAIK, the 5 elite nights apply to 2017 and not 2018, so they would really only make a difference if you were close to SPG75 or Ambassador. I chose the free night, since I ended this year with 5 remaining SNAs and didn't feel like rolling the dice on using them all up again in 2018.

Down year for me this year; just a lot less travel. Will requalify with my 24th and 25th stays later this month at the Maria Cristina and Augustine, respectively. Only 33 nights for me--the horror!

Just hit 50 nights last night after switching over from Hilton (116 nights there this year). Planning pretty much all my stays at Starwood next year, but I suppose a super duper promo may change me.

Was platinum with a challenge, and liking Starwood so far.

DO NOT choose 5 qualifying nights! If you read carefully, I believe it will say 5 qualifying nights for 2017, not 2018, unless it's different since it's your first time qualifying.

Here is the fine print:

Eligible Nights that are awarded to an eligible Platinum Member as the Platinum Member's Platinum 50 Eligible Nights Benefit will be awarded in the 2017 Qualifying Period, regardless of when the Platinum Member selects the Five Elite Qualifying Nights as his/her Platinum 50 Eligible Nights Benefit. For the avoidance of doubt, the Eligible Nights that are awarded will not be credited toward earning Elite Preferred Guest Membership Status in any Qualifying Period other than the 2017 Qualifying Period.
This is only good if you are aiming to hit 75 or 100 nights.

Congratulations. ^
