My reading was selective only in that it was a broad review of everything related to SNA's that I could find here. But I agree that the negative experiences are more likely to provoke a post. Thanks for sharing your positive events. I'll try to keep an open mind as the year end approaches and may push to hit 50 nights.

Just wanted to chime-in in hopes that Starwood gets some feedback and modifies the implementation so that SNA's are actually worth pursuing.
True & False. I ended up w 20 suite nights this year (10 when the program started + 10 when I reached 50 nights this year). I've used them all successfully at some great properties. However, it's also true I've gotten a suite on every stay I didn't use them on ( some in suites that are not part if the suite pool). But what's nice about the suite night awards is I knew 5 days out that I had a suite confirmed. On the stays I didn't use these, some I had to sweat till check and some I still got confirmed anywhere from 1-10 nights out anyway

I'm 2 for 2 using them - once for a 5 night stay in BCN and the other for a 3 night stay in MXP. Perhaps I'd have gotten the upgrades anyway but being able to up my priority for those stays was very nice. I've got a 5 night request in at the moment for a stay in Jan in SIN - hope I get to 3 for 3.

I'm not sure if this was answered somewhere already, but if you use SNA and are confirmed to a particular suite type, can you still be upgraded to a better suite once you check in? For example, for the St. Regis Princeville Resort in Kauai, the only confirmed SNA you can get is a Junior Suite but they have many suite types above this. I will probably use an SNA to guarantee that I get a suite, but I want to make sure that this won't take me out of the running for a better suite. Also, does anybody know if higher level suites at the St. Regis Princeville are given out as complimentary upgrades to Plats?

Thanks!

I don't get the logic behind having a different cancellation policy for the suite night coupon in addition to the cancellation policy for the hotel. Can somebody explain why the suite night coupon can't just "adopt" the overall reservation's cancellation policy?

I got burned on this last week when I had to cancel my trip last minute and was within the hotel's no-penalty time but had already passed the suite night penalty time

The suite night awards system is one that’s structured and operated centrally and therefore needs to operate by the same rules for every property within SPG. Unfortunately there’s not a method to really set rules on one amount of days for this hotel and another amount of days for another hotel, and our hotels globally have differing cancellation policies. In fact with some of our resorts and destination hotels that have 5, 7 and even 2 week cancellation policies, the Suite Night Award cancellation policy is more generous than the hotel policy is.

I will end up at around 46-47 nights or so (but 25+ stays) and considering adding a few nights to get to 50...Curious what others are doing

interesting question. I'm a bit beyond 25 nights this year (requalified for PlatMinus around the first of this month) and will hit 50 nights well before the end of the year. In fact, I would have last week, but I checked out after one day of a planned three-night stay when I got absolutely no upgrade whatsoever--not even one of the better rooms in the category I reserved, despite the hotel's pre-arrival email offer to upsale me to better rooms for $20-40 per night--at a property that has given me very nice upgrades in the past. I moved to a Hyatt, where I got a huge suite on a lower rate than I had had at the Starwood for the horrible room.

I'm a couple nights away from requalifying for Diamond with Hyatt (and I requalified for Marriott Plat earlier in the year, which I assume will again mean Plat Premier) and that's the status that I'm currently enthusiastic about since Hyatt has been treating me very well in general. By contrast, at SPG, with the exception of a recent one-night stay where I was upgraded from a (PAID) one bedroom suite to a deluxe two-bedroom suite, my only significant upgrades have been due to being a repeat guest at the property rather than my PlatMinus status.

So, yeah, I'll get my suite nights but most of my SPG experiences since February have caused me to fail to feel much pleasure about the prospect. I had been a big Starwood fan before SPG announced the retrospective changes to their program but now I just don't trust them not to do something similar every year and change the rules after people have qualified and when it's too late to qualify under the new terms. Last year I ended with about 45 nights and this year it will probably be in the 52-55 range, although probably at lower total cost as I've been giving most of my more expensive hotel stays since March to Hyatt (and RC) where possible. At this point, it's not even obvious to me that I'll stay enough with Starwood next year to use the ten suite nights I'm going to get. We'll see what happens.

Really interesting (and slightly bizarre) to log in a few times a week and see how the potential options for suite upgrades appear to change daily.

I think I have about 6 outstanding reservations left for 2012 currently. Over the past 3 weeks, at some point NONE of them were eligible for upgrade in advance, but at other times half were. Some properties seem to come and go, depending on when one logs in. Really odd.

Sometimes the upgrade options are nothing more than Club Room, while other times it's 1500 ft sq master suite.

Right. Then, wait until tomorrow and see some of them go away again. This is really odd given that some of my reservations are for the very, very end of December. I can't imagine why the upgrade options fluctuate as much as they do for distant bookings.

Whatever. Doesn't bother me either way, just seems bizarre.

Same as you. I will also do some extra stays if I am short of about five nights at the end of the year

Yes, OP - why no follow up on what happened? It's been over 2 months.

If a Suite Night Award can be taken away, then there is no benefit to having one and we're back to an upgrade based on availability. Ridiculous!

The Lurker posted this was sorted out.

The Lurker has previously posted this new offering has had some hiccups.

Sounds to me like this was a hiccup that's been sorted out.

Cheers,

So keep the resolution hush hush so others won't know what to expect if something similar happens to them
