Second: William, wondering if appropriate suites have yet to be identified for the Westin Snowmass? I tried to apply for a suite upgrade for a stay in February and the system said it could not process as no suites were available. Also asked my Ambassador and she said the same thing. Looked like lots of suites were actually available to book. Understand it's a new property and that identifying suites for upgrades were likely low on the priority list of a property in the throws of a renovation that has yet to open under the Westin brand.
I am pretty sure you have to wait until 5 days before arrival. Going to be difficult at a place like Snowmass.

Could you give this another try and see if it works for you now?

First, I booked a 5 night stay, but the reservation says the stay is not eligible for an SNA. My surmise is that since this reservation is a 5th Night Free, the rate did not qualify (since it was not an "SPG Free Night Award (including Cash & Points)." Is that correct?

I figured the SNA was worth the extra points, so I broke up the reservation into 1 Free Night Award followed by 4 Free Night Awards. The 1 nighter let me request the SNA, but the 4 nighter did not.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

5th night free award reservations should be eligible for SNA use. I have a 5 night reservation at the STR Princeville for next summer and it offers me an upgrade (which I can't use, as it's a 1K suite, and it's me, wife, 2 kids).

I suspect that suites are available for the 1 night you selected, but not for all of the other 4 nights. If a suite isn't available today (for the 4 and 5 night reservations), I think you wouldn't be offered the upgrade opportunity.

Just had my first experience using suite night awards- successfully upgraded 1 night at Sheraton Waikiki and 5 nights at St Regis Princeville.

Emails were sent to me at ~2:45 pm Hawaii time 5 days prior to check-in.

Process was painless and I am pleased with the result.

Can I still use my suite nights on nights booked with free points or cash+points?

On a place like the Westin Grand at Berlin, whats the best suite i'd get if i booked a night and ugpraded to the suite?

The top spa is 1250 euros a night, is it unlikely i'd get that one?

The Junior Suite only? Because i'd read that hotels were encouraged to offer their premium suites. Is the Junior suite even a full sized suite?

There's a bit of a difference between what is required and what is encouraged. Some hotels, though encouraged, may respond with only that which is required. The Westin Berlin has chosen their junior suites to be what is on their SNA availability, so if you go that route, it will be the only choice open to you. If you choose to go the traditional route, well...YMMV.

I believe that photos #13 and #14 of rooms on The Westin Grand, Berlin web site will give you the best idea of what a junior suite is there.

So you're saying if I don't use my suite nights, they might be more likely to give me a free upgrade due to my platinum status. Ok, i'll go that route then.

i'm looking at going around late november/December time for the Christmas markets.

No, that is not what I said. I only said that if you use your SNA's, your only choice will be limited to the junior suite. If you choose not to use them, you could get no suite upgrade at all, depending upon what is available at check-in.

Ok, thank you for your help and your very prompt response.

One final question. Is it possible to book up a standard night, then use my suite night at check in to see what's available, or does it have to be booked online beforehand?

Suite Night Awards have to be requested in advance. This is from the FAQ at spg.com/morepower:

Q: How close to my arrival date can I make a Suite Night Award upgrade request?
A: Members may request an upgrade using a Suite Night Award until 2:00 p.m. local hotel time the day before arrival.

Hope that helps.

Why can't I apply the SNA to a Le Meridien Chiang Mai stay?
