That could be another question for the wizards at Starwood. At what Starwood hotels will Foursquare not work because there is no 3G where they are located?

1. Check in to your room reservation at the front desk.
2. Get on wi-fi connection.
3. "Check in" on foursquare.
I'm fearing that someone is going to "check in" on foursquare, go out to dinner, and then return to the hotel only to find out that the hotel is oversold and doesn't have a room left.

My first foursquare starpoints posted!
However, I've had two stays in which I've checked-in, not sure which one this is for.

That would be horrifically expensive if you tried it in all the EU countries. And it wouldn't work at all in places where there is no 3G.

But based upon what do you think that having local SIMs with local limited-time data plans would be horrifically expensive or more expensive than roaming data?
Anyway, as mentioned elsewhere, it would work with WiFi also.

"Checking in" on foursquare and "checking in" to your hotel reservation are entirely separate things. Checking in on foursquare does not check you in to get your room key.
1. Check in to your room reservation at the front desk.
2. Get on wi-fi connection.
3. "Check in" on foursquare.

And since most hotels only let you use one device for free on the WiFi, and since there are still many hotels that do not have WiFi and you have to plug into the Ethernet, we can still use our laptops to do the Foursquare check in, right?

Well Thailand doesn't have 3G for the most part. But foursquare would still work.

In Europe, I don't want to change my SIM. How else would people be able to call me? Even though the EU has caps on the price, roaming data is still pretty expensive. If I leave Europe and travel to America, how much is a SIM with data? Note that I need a micro-SIM for the iPhone4. Same question for most African and middle eastern countries. From what I can tell, it is either not possible, or too expensive.

It doesn’t matter whether one checks in through foursquare’s mobile app or foursquare’s mobile site. Both types of check-ins will count towards the promotion.

I would imagine that the promo will work so long as "checked-in" on 4sq the same calendar day you "checked-out" of the hotel.

Use the full version on your laptop to find the one with the special. Then change the URL to the mobile version to check in.
Example:
If searching in Hilton Head Island, SC, a search for the Westin would find more than one venue. But choose the official one here with the special:
https://foursquare.com/venue/1157045
Then change the URL in your address bar as follows:
https://foursquare.com/mobile/venue/1157045
Then click, "Check in here."

It all depends what you use it for. Personally, I really like Foursquare because it's an easy way for me to:
a) Remember all the places I've been (what was the name of that great BBQ place that I went to in Dallas in March? Oh yeah...)
b) Let friends/acquaintances know where I am. I don't update my Facebook much so allowing Foursquare to do it lets my friends/family know what I'm up to, and a lot of times I'll get notes from acquaintances with whom I've lost touch, but they noticed that I checked in somewhere in their city. It's been a neat way to get back in touch with people.
I'll agree that I have no use for mayorships or the leaderboard though.

FYI... You don't have to actually be at a location to use Foursquare.. You can do all of the checkins from your PC.
Go to : https://foursquare.com/mobile/login?...e=%2Fmobile%2F
Log In
Set the location of where you are
Go to Checkin and type in the location of the hotel your staying at. Make sure in your history it shows that you checked into a Hotel and not an Off Grid location.
This may be handy for people who don't want to use the App or can't on their phone.
Just Checked in Here from home.

Here's a quick recap of all the places you've been.

Why does it say on SPG's site that: Starpoints bonuses will only be awarded to registered users who check in using the foursquare mobile phone app.
Doesn't this suggest you have to check in via the your mobile phone and the check in via PC will not count? I prefer not to download this app on my Blackberry but the way I'm reading it I have no choice if I want the SPG points. Can someone provide this answer? Thanks.
