My usual 2 cents....

If I stay 10 times at an average rate of $150 / night, this promo amounts to an extra 6k points.

I am not complaining, 6000 free points is better than a sharp stick in the eye, but I don't see this as an incentive to move stays with Hyatt offering 1000 - 2000 gx bonus points for most stays, at the hotels that I frequent, pre-Q4 program announcement.

Having re-qualified for SPG Plat in March, if Hyatt has a decent Q4 program, SPG may not see me until January.

Whilst I appreciate any promo that comes our way, I'm a little shocked that almost 90% of my stays for the rest of this year are in the excluded list.

Fortunately, roughly 80% of those can be diverted to Hilton.

Boo to the properties that elected not to participate.

Although, in all fairness, I suspect it might have cost those properties a *lot* more to participate in this promo than normal, hence the disturbingly low uptake proportion.

WOW! I see what mahasamatman is saying with the 84% participation rate - that doesn't seem so bad, but those 16% that have opted out are hitting me square in my travel wheelhouse.

Currently staffed on an indefinitely long term project in the NYC area and all my major properties (Westin, W's) are not participating. As far as participating properties in NYC we have:

The Manhattan at Times Square - a complete and total dump
Four Points Sheraton Midtown - haven't stayed here, but only 250 Plat points and I typically view Four Points as less than full service
Four Points Sheraton Manhattan Chelsea - Only 2 suites, same problems as above, are the strikers out front finally gone (it's been a while since I was there)
Four Points Sheraton Manhattan Soho - same per Four Points as above
Aloft Harlem - Harlem! Yikes!
Sheraton Tribeca - this may be a viable option, but not opening until mid-November

I was so sure I'd be dumping Hilton in early September, but now it looks like I'll be sticking with them through the end of their promotion period at the end of September.

At that time, I'll check and see how close I am to retaining Diamond, if it's close, I'll likely stick in there until qualification is complete. If it's no promotion from Hilton after this time, I'll be back to Starwood. If Hilton does throw one out there that's compelling, I'll probably stick with them for a bit.

In fairness, my experience from April - July with Starwood in NYC showed a lot of sellouts and full capacity at those properties that are currently opting out of this promotion.

I want to come back Starwood, I really do! Right now other offers out there are just too compelling. I'll be sure to give you another look in October.

That's basically what I'm seeing here. Running a single promo for all of Q3 and Q4 is a little out of character. And in my experience, Q3 promos are typically not among the more generous ones.

I will undoubtedly be spending 10 nights at SPG properties before the end of the year, so while I appreciate the extra nights, this will not drive more of my business to SPG. It may drive it to particular SPG properties, thanks to the low participation rate.

But making a comparison between Hyatt and SPG, SPG comes up short. Assuming a $150 room rate, this promo gets me a total of 10,500 points on ten nights' stay. My stays average 1-3 nights, so I'll assume 5 stays; at a mix of properties let's say that's 3x500 and 2x250 Plat amenities, bringing the total to 12,500.

With the same spending mix at Hyatt, even without a promo, I'll get 6.5 points per dollar standard -- so 9750. On top of that, assuming the same property mix, I'll get 3x1000 and 2x500 welcome amenities, bringing me to 13,750 base. Add on top of that a couple of Hyatt's perpetual G bonuses -- not available everywhere, but there's ~200 hotels with them right now. Let's say one of each @ 1000, 1500, and 2000. So, 18,250 without limited time promotions.

I don't think I value a Hyatt point as highly as a SPG point, but they're not terribly far off when redeeming for high end properties. Their Cat5 and Cat6, at 18k and 22k/night, are roughly equivalent to SPG at 12k and 20k. (And notably, a suite at a Cat6 -- their highest -- is only 33k a night.) So even assuming a 1.5:1 value ratio in favor of SPG, that 18,250 Hyatt points is worth around 12,100 Starpoints.

So what I take home from this is:
  • I accrue as many rewards under this promo as I do normally at Hyatt
  • SPG's non-promotional earn rate is significantly lower than Hyatt's.

Setting aside all the hue and cry about SPG's promos compared to last year or five years ago or next month at Marriott or whatever, I think the fundamental problem is that SPG's standard point accrual is at a disadvantage, at least compared with Hyatt.

I can't recall ever seeing a 6-month promo. This one is about the same duration as last year's end-of-year promo.

Tell that to the person I was quoting (dtremit). He was the one talking about 6-month promos.

Every night doesn't count

Every night counts - except those at 100+ properties that do not

I think the OP was referring to there being only one promo in 2 quarters.

some stats

I did a quick digging on Starwood's press releases. Here's what I got on the number of participating properties through some Quarterly promotions of SPG program.

So Starwood have currently a total around 1000 hotels in 2010. 992 hotels at 2009 and 942 hotels at end of 2008 according to their 10K filing with authorities

They have less hotels in previous years, so the % participation would have been higher in 2008 and 2009.

2008 Q4 SPG You Choose Promo: at least 890 Participating properties (90% hotel participation)

2009 Q1 SPG Nights After Nights Promo: at least 890 Participating properties (90% participation)
2009 Q2 SPG Earn Free Weekend Nights: at least 875 Participating properties (88% participation)
2009 Q3 SPG Nights Advance / Nights Count Double: at least 850 participating properties (86% participation)

2010 Q1 SPG More Nights = More Rewards Promo: at least 850 participating properties (85% participation)

2010 SPG Free weekend Nights Promo: at least 920 participating properties (92%)
2010 Q3 SPG Rewarding Returns: at leat 940 participating properties (94% )

2010 SPG current Every Night Counts Promo: at lesat 850 participating properties (85% participation)
So yes. It appears that the current "Every Night Counts" promotion is on the low end of the participation level with all Starwood hotels.

The ones at or above 90% hotel participation promotion are quite popular for customers and hotels.

It would be interesting to see which properties come up as non-participating on multiple lists. i.e., which ones never seem to offer promos.
