RTW starting CAI... a few queries
Hi,
I'm looking into a RTW starting in Cairo and am looking at SKYRTWs which I've not investigated before. As many have commented on here they aren't quite as forthcoming with info and ease of planning as the other alliances so this immediately puts me off, but, hey, I'm persisting for a bit :) Looking at the fare rules I got from a travel agent here, I've just got a few questions: It doesn't list ICN and GMP as being "considered as one city" which seems a bit harsh. Is this definitely the case? All the references in the rules refer to 'stopovers' and not to 'segments' which, I think, contrasts with OW and *A, i.e. on the latter two if I go overland JFK-YUL then they will (annoyingly) count that as one of my sixteen flight segments but my interpretation of the SkyTeam 'stopover' rule is that overland JFK-YUL will be one 'stopover' and thus I won't lose a flight segment if I do that (tho obviously it is still counted in the mileage). Am I reading this right? (I kind of think I can't be, because then there'd be no point in listing airports considered in the same city because you wouldn't lose anything going overland between any airports? Also, I must admit I don't understand what "A FLIGHT COUPON WITHOUT CONFIRMED SPACE CONSTITUTES A STOPOVER" means... but have a suspicion this might be where I'm slipping up!) Also, due to somewhat unforthcoming AF and DL agents here, it'd be great if someone could post the economy fare prices for the SKYRTW tickets on here. Also an up to date copy of the rules would be great because what I have from an agent here doesn't list the flight exceptions (which I assume are just the codeshares?) so not sure if there's anything else I'm missing. The latest copy of the rules in this thread still lists CO in there so I assume there's updated versions now. (Why oh why the SkyTeam website can't just tell us this I don't know... why do I need to "Consult your travel agent or one of our Member airlines" for something which I can download in seconds as a pdf? Ditto the fare prices... are they determined for me not to buy this ticket?) If it comes to actually ticketing this, then what are my options? My first flight would probably be to YUL so I can either do that with AF or DL, but I could go the other direction and have my first flight with KQ. Is one carrier definitely advantageous to book with because they don't apply other carriers' surcharges? (As happens with OW.) If this was ticketed through an agent in the UK what base fare would they charge? (I assume the same fare as here, but converted into GBP at what rate? The rules I have don't seem to say...) Lastly, the SkyTeam website is still advertising their 10th anniversary "up to 30% off" offer.... which says book by 30th September. Has this been extended or are they just exceedingly lazy when it comes to updating things? Doesn't inspire one to get this ticket with them instead of another alliance!! Thanks for your help, and sorry if there's a tone of SkyTeam negativity in the post, I just feel I'm asking awfully simple questions that I can normally answer myself in seconds... |
A fare spreadsheet is posted here if you look for it. Sorry I'm on the run and don't have time to search for it. And did you look at the Skyteam website http://www.skyteam.com/about/products/index.html

The fare info I could find on FT all predated the posts a few pages back in this forum talking of hikes in the RTW fares. It did however give CAI as the cheapest starting point... hence my interest :)
The SkyTeam website gives you "General Terms and Conditions of Sale (extract)" and then says "Consult your travel agent or one of our Member airlines"... Why they only put the "extract" up there I don't know. The Cairene agents I've contacted haven't been particularly helpful so hoped one of you guys would be a better source of info! Thanks. |
China Pass
Hi
A word hopefuly to the wise regarding this product. I looked into this in some detail as I travel around China frequently. I found that it was only under extreme circumstances that this provided any value at all. Generally internal Chinese flights are available at some discount, have a play with this and you will see: http://english.ctrip.com/ When you work out your mileages, the prices ST want for the China Pass and generally available fares, the generally available fares are cheaper. Of course there are exceptions (eg. at peak times when there may be no discount or on some strange routings with little competiton) but generally you are better off forgetting the China Pass and buying internal flights directly. The pricing comparison on the ST website is disingenuous to say the least. Their example of PEK-SHA-CAN-PEK can be bought on several days next week for about $320. Their website says it will cost $1,806. China Pass for the same is $560 nickyboy |
It is a general thing, which applies to all airlines, that one should be very careful with booking RTW tickets and these passes. It is often cheaper to use standard return/circle/open jaw tickets.

Obviously, it depends on where you want to go. If you want to go from London to Australia and to the US East Coast, say to NYC, WAS, MIA, it's cheaper if you buy two return tickets, for example. Same from London to Australia and to South America, say to RIO, SAO, EZE.

Yeah, one of the big draws of using RTW fares is that you can go places that otherwise would cost a fortune to get to. This includes places experiencing conflict (think Iraq, Pakistan) or places that are simply out of the way (Easter Island).
I'd love to set myself up to be able to use miles for a trip like this in a few years. |

Interesting. What about CDG or AMS? Or MXP? Some biz fares are much cheaper from Italy.
