Credit Inquiries
Credit Inquiries for Personal cards come from BofA. Inquiries for business cards come from FIA.
Credit bureaus usually merge inquiries from the same requester made on the same day.
Inquiries from BofA and FIA will not be merged.
Does one have to call BoA to lower a card's credit limit?
Yes, there is no longer any way to contact BOA online. Phone is the only method currently.
When do the initial bonus miles post? You will get the miles after the statement closes for the cycle in which you meet your minimum spend. Usually AS points show up the Sunday evening after your statement closes, but sometimes it takes an additional week.
If there's a statement credit, when does it post?
It seems to be batch-processed. It will post automatically. Can be on the same statement or the next statement. It does not appear to be based on the statement close date.
Can you send a secure message through your account online?
No. BOA has removed the secure message functionality, even for Preferred members. The only way to contact BOA now is to call them.
Can I apply for another personal Alaska card if I have one open already?
Some people still can, but these days many people get denied. If you don't want to risk getting denied, it's probably better if you close any existing personal Alaska cards before applying for another one. But be sure to lower credit limit as low as possible at least a few business days before you close the card (though the earlier you can do it the better), because credit limit that's left on the card when you close it stays unavailable to new card applications for a year or more (while credit limit that's lowered as a separate step becomes available to new card applications much sooner)!

I had such a problem a few years ago with my Ally Bank debit card. I never use it for purchases, and rarely for ATm withdrawals at local banks. Fairly certain it wasn’t the victim of a skimmer. And yet it was used in online fraud. Ally had no explanation, but did refund the money immediately. Still, it could have caused other transactions to bounce if I hadn’t caught it shortly after the charge posted.

Pretty sure it was some kind of insider job. If memory serves right, other people at the time were also seeing debit card fraud with Ally cards. Since it was an online purchase, it presumably would have required more info than just a lucky guess of a card number. Expiration date and CVV, perhaps name and zip code, would have to be known or guessed, too.

Not exactly sure why this application (described below) was declined. Past few years I’m invariably at ~20/24 including all biz cards, ~3.5/24 for Chase application purposes.
Generally accepted BOA application/approval rules: 2 BOA cards per 2 months, 3 per 12 months, 4 per 24 months.
My (likely irrelevant) BOA history: 15 year old BOA biz card for Cessna airplane (partner and LLC), 15 years ago applied for a NY Yankees BOA MC in person at Yankee Stadium to get a Yankees blanket and closed the account the day the card was received without activating the card, 2006-2009 BOA AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) MC never used, 2009-2013 BOA AOPA Visa closed due to inactivity.
My relevant BOA history: Only other BOA cards have been Alaska which I’ve churned for 9 years, 17 cards, first 11 personal each closed at 3-6 months (used to be completely acceptable), last 6 biz (to stay under Chase 5/24) each closed at 12.5 months, minimal use of any beyond SUB minimum spend usually on first statement, ~650k Alaska miles earned, 1 Alaska flight during that time. Original goal was Alaska miles to redeem for Emirates award flight but of course that went away a few years ago and I ended up using AA miles for Etihad award flights. Best laid plans …
Most recent Alaska Biz cards: 9/21-9/22, 3/22-4/23, 8/22-9/23, 6/23-still open, 11/23-still open. 3/22 application was mid-March, thus 24.6 months ago.
Applied a couple of days ago, declined. Called immediately, multiple times with multiple forwarding(s) to get through to recon, learned the numbers above (the hard way). Lovely agent submitted an “exception request” a day or 2 ago, said it would take 3-5 days, called 1 day later on Friday (I’ve had many patients, I have no patience) was told it had been reviewed and (still) declined, I asked why, agent said “velocity”, I asked “too many BOA or too many overall”, she said “Alaska in 24 months”. Plan to apply again in early May.

I've had a hard time finding weather the 3/12 are any bank or BOA only. Any tips?

Do you have any tips for someone new to churning Alaska Biz cards? Specifically:
- Do you typically use your LLC or just your SSN, or do you alternate?
I applied with my legitimate rental LLC that earns $60k+/yr and still somehow went through weeks of business verification hell with BoA's awful reco system, despite my objectively stellar personal credit profile (very high credit score and personal income). Prob the worst experience I've had second to Barclays. Meanwhile, my dad and my sister both got instant approvals using their SSN, no business (similar credit scores). - Is once every ~6 month the generally recommended velocity?
- Do you have a business banking relationship with BoA?
I've read in a few places BoA is more lax with 3/12 or 7/12 (for deposit account holders) for Business cards. I've also heard that business cards require a business deposit account (rather than personal) to get 7/12.
Was declined for Alaska BIZ too. No previous BOA cards ever. I did recon and they also mentioned velocity, in which the are including biz cards aswell? They pulled TU and there was literally only 1 other inquiry on there, amex from 10/2023. We denied again on recon for same reasons. I've had a hard time finding weather the 3/12 are any bank or BOA only. Any tips?
- Have BoA Deposit Account: 6 new cards in the last twelve months is tolerated. If you have 7 new cards in the past 12 months, your application will be denied.
- No BoA Deposit Account: 2 new cards in the last twelve months is tolerated. If you have 3 new cards in the past 12 months, your application will be denied.
- If you have $250k+ with Bank of America, you may be able to bypass the 7/12 rule.

First few personal apps in 2015 and 2016 were approved at Visa Platinum accounts, not Visa Signature, with much lower SUB and lower CL, at that time there was much discussion about procedures for changing the type of account immediately upon approval. In 2021 I switched to Alaska biz apps only, since then it seems that my BOA biz approvals have gone more smoothly than those original personal apps.
I’m a believer in BOA 2/3/4 rules, aim for 2 biz cards per year. Highly attuned to Chase 5/24, choose not to use a 5/24 spot for a BOA personal card.
Small, minimally active BOA savings account ostensibly for over 30 years at branch close to home. Originally (1992) East River Savings Bank, renamed NatWest in 1993, renamed Fleet Bank in 1996, renamed BOA in 2004, same account number through all mergers and purchases.
DoC is more likely than me to have accurate information about BOA velocity, BOA to me is 3rd or 4th priority, after Chase, AmEx and …

I just called to recon the bus credit card but failed. Should I call back later to try again or it is done now?

(4/6/24) Reference: BOA Biz Recon (Small Biz Lending, Credit Analyst) 888-782-7717, 888-569-4439 (M-F 8am-7pm EST), both answered by live human in 2-4 minutes. (Both numbers confirmed multiple times in the past 2-3 days.)
…

He said Alaska Airlines has started a new limitation of 2 Alaska Airlines cards per 24 months from approval date, unsure of possible mix of personal and business. They cannot override that limitation, it’s from Alaska Airlines.

A tip for anyone as frustrated as I am with Bank of American telephone customer "service": apparently pushing "0" to get a CSR only works after you've sat through the balance, due date, etc, and made selections in the first two levels of menus. Once you've made the second selection, the "0" seems to work to get through.
I have never dealt with a bank that makes it so hard to talk to a human being, which is particularly frustrating when their website is so poor.

BofA has apparently done away with instant issue credit card numbers online, so it is no longer possible to use the card immediately after applying. However... There is a small hack with just adding 4 years today's date to get the expiration to have a valid credit card
1) Complete your application for the card, set up your Bank of America online account, and activate your card. If you skip activation, you won't be able to proceed to step 3.
2) Once logged into your account, navigate to the Information and Services tab. Click on "Show" under Account Number to view your complete card details.
3) To book a flight, call Alaska at 1-800-252-7522 (1-800-ALASKAAIR). Provide the agent with your card number, the billing address associated with the card, and the expiration date.
If you're nice, the agent will waive the $15 booking fee.
Hope this helps someone!

So now you can activate the card (if you know how, because they haven't told you) , and use it with the calculated expiration date, as long as the seller doesn't ask for the code?
I suppose they could refuse to activate because they haven't officially "sent" you the card yet, but once it's gone out you could still do this before the card arrives in the mail.

Based in part on uncertainty regarding the declined application above and exact 24 month restrictions (all BOA, Alaska only), I applied again yesterday (Sunday), “unable to approve”. Called 888-569-4439 this morning, answered immediately by (very nice) live human being. First call disconnected after a few minutes, immediate 2 HUCAs (each answered immediately by human) to get the same agent again.

My history is:
Personal - opened Jan 2024
Biz #1 - opened Mar 2023, closed Mar 2024
Biz #2 (using EIN, different biz name, and different phone #) - opened Aug 2022, close Aug 2023
