Rapid-fire checking in also is documented as a no-no.

Questions to those who have had their accounts closed:

Do you have "friends" on FourSquare, or whatever you use to checkin? They're serious about that too.

And what are you using to checkin if not 4Square?

Yes, before getting closed, I did have friends on FourSquare, and I did use it for other things besides TopGuest sign-ins.

It was clearly rapid-fire that killed me, even though I was literally at each hotel (on the road) when I checked in. This probably happened 25-30 tiimes total, not daily. The hotel that is very close to my house I checked into daily and the others only as a driveby.

I finally had multiple check-ins, dating back to May, all hit my PCR account at once.

I'm not getting anything lately via United, which doesn't go through the usual TopGuest site. Eh.

I've been blatantly auto4sqing for months with no hint of getting shut down on any of my accounts. I'm not being particularly careful because the stakes aren't really that high, although I'm only checking in once per day per account.

Not that i'm complaining, but...

Is anyone else getting 150pts for 1 check in at PC hotels ( holiday inn, ect...) It's so weird. Like every 3 days TG gives me an extra 100pts for 1 check in. Am I special or is this happening to others

Not me. But occassionally strange things happen. In early June I got daily check ins for UA, even though I didn't check in. It lasted until UA dropped out of the program. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Ride on!

jk2 Sep 6, 2012 1:12 pm

I don't understand what is going on with TopGuest. E-mails arrive that inform me that I made a check-in, but points didn't show up. For example, me and my friend (who just signed up with TopGuest) did check-in in Holiday Inn, I am getting the points, he doesn't (but e-mails always arrive). His points (about 300) didn't post at all (even 50 points for registering) on his PC account, they are only visible on his TG account. I suggested him to erase his PC number and put it again, but this didn't help.

The same story with VA (getting e-mails but no points), and I had several occasional check-ins in Viola hotels in NY - no points at all. I hope TG does not falling apart.

You could always email them. I did this on the recommendation of someone here and it worked just fine. I also had a ver friendly exchange with the csr.

Were you checking in near an airport? UA was counting any check-ins within a certain radius - maybe 2 miles? - regardless of what the place actually was.

Nope. I was actually in London at the time. They just kept showing up. I was checking into my London venues. We were staying at a Crowne Plaza and those showed up just fine. I also checked into where ever we were that day.

Gotta ask. Is anyone else gotten into checking in at places and getting badges? Maybe I'm just a little geeky, but while in Europe I was having fun checking into museums, world heritage sites, restaurants etc and getting new badges. My husband ( a coffee-a-holic) is currently on level 9 of the Juan Valdez badge. Do I need to seek counseling?

as long as you are not mayor of stall #3 in the men's room in the East Terminal at DEN you are fine.

Kind of surprised Topguest is even still around. No way the customers are getting what they intend to get out of it.

ronocnikral Sep 7, 2012 8:48 am

I'm just counting down the days until this program kicks the bucket. Or until they kick me out.

Until then, mobile web check ins in a different city has been my way to the promised land. stay the course, the points will come.

Anyone having log-in issues today? Trying to log into my account and it just goes back to the homepage without logging me in.

Wondering if my account got taken down.

CanadianProf Sep 7, 2012 9:03 pm

No issues for me with logging in. Just checked in to a HIE.

Same thing happened to me today. I actually stayed at a CP the other day and now I can't log in? Other people in family still can log in. Strange.

Just sent them an email, as I know all my check ins were legit!

i can't log in too.

Same here. Couldn't login. Page would refresh back to the homepage.

Emailed and got a reponse that my account was suspended for misuse.

I replied that I was in fact actually present at each check-in location and got a second reply that I should provide receipts.

Replied that I could and got a third reply that they "re-reviewed" my activity and had decided not re-activate my TG account (without my even having the opportunity of providing the proof they initially requested).

BS and bad business if you ask me. TG = :td:

debwany24 Sep 8, 2012 12:41 pm

if you can't log in, then I'm pretty sure your account is suspended. thats what happened to me last week. I couldn't log in, the next day I got an email that my account is suspended for misuse

tyfabes Sep 8, 2012 12:55 pm

Got an email response from TG about an hour ago. They confirmed my account was suspended.

Not worth the hassle in trying to reactivate, at least for me.

Yup; no joke.

Thought that was a little bizarre.

flyerwanabe1 Sep 8, 2012 3:19 pm

looks like mine is suspended. I checked in at the same holiday inn 3 times in September, 6 times in August, 3 times in July, and 10 times in June. Each time I was at the physical location. In no way I was abusing the program. Not sure what trigger the suspension.

I assume it is suspended since I can't log in.

Also, I called up a friend of mine that's in the program, he say he checked in less than 5 times a month but all his ids are wiped from the website. He can log in but can't re-add the accounts back.

In total, I earned about 1000 priority club points and 500 hilton points.

balima Sep 8, 2012 4:57 pm

Neither I or my son can log into our accounts. But hubby still can. Guess this train has come to a stop.

satz Sep 8, 2012 5:05 pm

Funny my gf cannot log in into her account while I still can. I guess they have had a heavy hand in closing accounts lately.

aviator8 Sep 8, 2012 5:24 pm

they must have done some sort of audit. Neither me or my wife can log in. I think we are suspended. I have been using autosq for logins, I have been lazy and have not been changing he schedule to vary checkins, though so there was a pattern that would have been detectable to someone scrutinizing the activitiy.

Too many people earning what I bet would be "too many" points for their business model to be profitable.

I think they are shutting it down for many no matter if you legitimately checked in or not. I asked how many checkins is okay and they wouldn't answer.

Sounds reasonable to me for them to ask for additional proof that you were at the locations you claimed to be if their system flagged you for review.

Or they've wised up to the cheaters (drive-bys, auto4sq, etc)

That's ridiculous. I dont recall any rules saying we had to stay or pay for anything at the hotels we are checking into

But if they think your check-ins aren't legit and suspend you, how else could you prove that you were actually there? I'm an Instagram user and have never had a problem. If they ever question my check-ins I would simply refer them to my pictures.

I'm willing to bet most of the people who were kicked out were foursquare only users.

I understood the terms of topguest, as well as the risks associated with using autosq. I was just giving another datapoint, and guess as to what is happening. I am in no way shocked that it is occuring, as the current setup of awarding points without actually staying at a place and validating that stay is unsustainable.

Topguest Help
SEP 08, 2012 |
Hello whatmeworryaus - Thank you for contacting us.

The reason why you are unable to access your account is because it has been suspended.
Thanks and happy travels,

Topguest
Got this from Topguest!

What do I do now? What a lazy answer!

Do I wait, do i argue, Do I request my account be cancelled or do I launch a class action against Topguest?

Take 'em to the mat!

...Or move on to the next thing. For the avg person, this is MAYBE a couple thousand legit points a year? Sure every little bit helps, but you can focus your efforts elsewhere.
