For New Zealand from 1 October 2019, if you are from a visa waiver country you must request an NZeTA before you travel.
NZ transit does/may require a NZeTA. But check yourself.

My issue is that I'll land 5 hours before the NZ flight departs. I don't think the AZ counter will be open until 3-4 hours before departure. So, am I stuck just waiting in the departure hall for up to 2 hours for the AZ counter to open? Any ideas?

**edit** thinking of just using the gym at the Hilton -- since I'll have my luggage, i can shower and change too.... The gym seems to have really good reviews online.
Ughh. I'm in the same boat. I'm flying DL to Chicago and landing in terminal 2 at 2p. NZ 27 doesn't depart until 920p so I am assuming the Air New Zealand ticket counter will not open until 520p. We really wanted to use the UA Polaris Lounge but its all starting to seem a bit chaotic. Suggestions appreciated!
btw, how will you be able to access the Hilton gym?

Chotic is the right word. I'll have my boarding pass for the NZ flight even if I haven't checked my bags -- but I can't leave the security clearance area of my AA flight (Terminal 3) or I'll be stuck with my bags and won't be able to clear through Terminal 1 to get to the Polaris lounge. My thinking is that the only way to get to the Polaris lounge without my luggage would be to just walk over there (internally) from Terminal 3. If I did this, then I'd have to abandon my luggage which would be spinning around the carousel in Terminal 3. Assuming I spend 90 min in the Polaris then I'd have to go back to Terminal 3 (internally -- ie without leaving security) to get my luggage.... then leave Terminal 3 and head over to Terminal 5 to check in with NZ.

I thought about just hitting the Hilton gym after reading this article -- https://www.travelcodex.com/wanna-fl...irport-allure/

Seems like you can do a day pass for $20-25 (ish) (article may not have the right prices from what I found out). In this plan, I'd just leave Terminal 3, collect my baggage -- walk over to the Hilton gym, work out, use the sauna/steam room, shower, and then head straight over to Terminal 5 for check in. I'd just bail on going to the Polaris lounge in this scenario. Doesn't seem to be worth it. Plus, based on the amenities of the Hilton gym, it seems to have what I need to kill a few hours.

I've looked at the lounges in T5 and they all seem to be way more basic than the Polaris -- but once I've showered/chilled at the Hilton -- I'm figuring I won't need much more (except something to eat).

Well .. it looks like I'm totally SOL. I had my staging flight all set to go -- to arrive in Chicago 5-6 hours before the NZ flight. Alas, winter hit. All flights cancelled into ORD. BUT it still looks like NZ is going to take off -- so, they're not allowing free rerouting/rebooking. All I can do is cancel the ticket (for a refund) OR pay the fare difference -- which clearly can't be done on these fares. Alas, I believe I will NOT be going to Sydney after all. Sooooooo disappointed. There's literally another 20 min before I have to either cancel or I'll get no showed. So, I'm going to have to pull the trigger on cancellation soon.....

Oh man.... That sucks.
Is there no flight you can pay your way to ord? Where are you flying from?

If you no-show can you standby on the next flight?

Sadly, no -- can't make it. I was at the airport in Toronto for 6 hours... kept getting moved to different planes until everything was just cancelled. Flights on United even left Toronto only to have to turn back when ORD wouldn't let them land.

No. NZ says that if their flight isn't disrupted, then they won't accommodate any changes without a change fee plus difference in fare. For them, it'll be as if I just missed the flight (regardless of the weather issues).

Also, worth noting that tomorrow there isn't an NZ flight from ORD. So, in order to get me to SYD they'd have to reroute me on United -- which they don't want to do.

Oh dude - that is devastating. Sorry to hear things went sideways like that for you. Let us know if you were able to figure anything out.

Final update -- the ORD-AKL (NZ27) ended up taking off (albeit after a 45 min taxiing delay) notwithstanding that over 1000 flights were cancelled. Since that flight was not interrupted, there was no additional accommodation that NZ could/would do.

NZ was really friendly over the phone and actually most of the agents (I think I called them 100 times while at the airport in my attempt to see if NZ27 would be cancelled ) were genuinely empathetic. I know (as most of us on this forum know) that my staging flight isn't their issue/concern. My experience at YYZ was quite exciting. For those that care:
  • I initially booked a 3:11pm direct flight YYZ-ORD on AA using Avios. I received notification at 12noon that that AA flight had been cancelled.
  • I called AA but they were not willing to accommodate me on another airline since the ticket was an Avios ticket (AA had cancelled all YYZ-ORD flights by then)
  • at around 12:15pm I scrambled to book an Aeroplan direct flight on Air Canada's direct YYZ-ORD flight at 2:55pm.
  • Arrived at the airport -- checked in -- and everything seemed to be on track. Until 1:30pm when the flight got delayed to 4:15pm. This delay meant that my flight had the same departure time as the next AC flight from YYZ-ORD. This usually means one of them will get cancelled. On Flightstats I could see that my inbound flight was delayed in LGA (another horrible airport) such that it seemed impossible that it would get to Toronto before 4:15pm whereas the other AC 4:15pm inbound flight was 15 min away from landing. I decided to see if I could go standby on the scheduled 4:15pm flight, thinking that one was way more likely to actually take off. As "luck" would have it, as the agent was looking into it, my flight (the one coming from LGA) got cancelled.
  • With my flight being cancelled, plus other flights that were cancelled -- I was now the first person in line that eventually grew to be over 200 people. This was when I was lucky enough to have a sympathetic AC agent that attempted to get NZ to release their ticket and book me on the AC YYZ-SYD routing. After 30-45 min on the phone with NZ that whole plan collapsed. I was now left with nothing.
  • I ended up calling the priority line at Air Canada and somehow got them to convert my Aeroplan (YYZ-ORD) ticket to a seat on a United flight that was initially scheduled to depart at noon but was now scheduled to leave at 7:15pm. That still would have worked to get me to my NZ flight -- since my baggage was checked right though. BUT I knew this would be my last hope.
  • I later found out that the United flight right before mine left Toronto, made it to Chicago but was told to turn around and go back to Toronto. So, I knew that having a confirmed seat really meant nothing given the chaos at ORD.
  • After I had my seat on the 7:15pm flight there were a large group of REALLY angry passengers that disembarked (having now been travelling in circles) and were now told to go back to the counter to rebook.
  • I was tracking the inbound 7:15pm flight (which was coming from ORD as well), and everything seemed to be going well -- until it was 5 min away from Toronto. Then I got the cancellation notice - that flight was cancelled.
  • At this point I knew I had no other options -- except to hope/pray that NZ27 suffered a disruption that would allow NZ to reroute me.
  • 50 min before NZ27 was to depart, I had to call it -- at that point the flight was still showing as "on time" and I didn't want to get hit with a no show forfeited ticket. I called them and cancelled. The only 'good' news is that they did refund me my full fare (no change/cancellation fee).
After getting home from the airport at around 9pm, I spent most of the night cancelling all of my Australian travel bookings. Overall, I may be in the hole by a few hundred dollars of non-refundable cancellation fees but all of my hotels were cancellable.

I don't know what the lesson is of this whole experience is -- I don't think I would do anything differently. I never would have booked to be at ORD the night before or even at 6am that morning -- maybe if I had originally booked the staging flight on Air Canada I could have been accommodated faster once things started to get ugly in Chicago.

As a group of us at the airport were commiserating, my analogy of airport travel is that it's kind of like a casino -- if you're not winning immediately, you're likely not going to walk away a winner. When things go bad at the airport, they tend to go horribly bad.

Wow wow wow, sounds like a harrowing, frustrating, teeth-gnashing experience! I'd be hopping around like a madman lol.
How did you talk NZ into refunding you for your non-refundable ticket?

My guess is the 100 calls, the weather, the tragic unfolding of events, and a dash of luck

Pretty much -- the NZ call center staff are legit a different breed of airline personnel. They seem to legitimately care -- even if they have to abide by their rules -- they aren't nasty (like some carriers can be) about it. Most (if not all) of the folks I spoke to were genuinely wanting me to get to Sydney to cross this one off the bucket list. They truly felt bad that I was not only going to miss my flight but would be stuck with a 'dead' ticket (since we all knew the difference in fare alone would have made changing it impossible)

I booked the same itinerary for next month (ORD-LAX-AKL-SYD). I will be flying YYZ-ORD on a UA flight. This post gives me hope, but can someone confirm that I will be able to use the Polaris lounges in ORD and LAX? Do I need carry on luggage to achieve this, or will I be able to check a bag from YYZ all the way to SYD?

Yes, United will be able to check your bags right through to SYD -- since they're all on *A. They did this for me from YYZ.

As for Polaris access -- others may be able to comment but I think because you're flying ORD - LAX (not ORD-AKL) you won't get access to Polaris in ORD but will get it in LAX since that leg will be considered an "international business flight".

The poster you quoted is on UA ORD-LAX-MEL so he gets Polaris at both ORD and LAX.

Since you are on UA YYZ-ORD-LAX and NZ LAX-AKL you only get it at LAX.
