If you are starting from the West, there are incredibly cheap TATLs around at the moment - fairly easy to get your 10,000 miles for around $500 or less.

Plats face higher fees for last-minute award cancellations and last minute award bookings. I don't know if there's any other benefit downgrades. UA does seem to be giving 1Ks a little more and Plats a little less.

I saw that as well, $80 LAX-DEN in Jan too! Good for starting off the new year. They have a 777 on it as well, possible to fly there and back same day on that plane.
