This is superb, thanks very much indeed. I found I could do an immediate turn in LAS for an extra $50 which saves a horrible red-eye, so am thinking about doing that...

If you are looking to go to Europe, there is ORD-DUB for less than $520. Probably wouldn't earn as much miles though.

I have temporary gold so I will earn that number of miles. Are there options to Dub?
Thank you again. Very much appreciated!

As far as I'm aware, bonus miles only apply to redeemable miles (RDM). In your case, Gold earns "8 x the amount of base fare (less taxes and surcharge)." If you are looking for status, you need to collect PQM's, which is based on booking class. The price I quoted is in economy which earns 100% of distance flown; in comparison, a discounted J fare earns 200%. That said, ORD-DUB r/t is about 7,800 miles which equals to 7,800 PQM's. For RDM, you need to multiply the base fare by 8. Let's just say the base fare is $400, you multiply that by 8 and you get 3,200. That amount is how many redeemable miles (RDM) you get. Not a whole lot as you can see.

Here's a $520 to Warsaw for 10/28-10/30 that gets around 9500 miles:
https://goo.gl/flights/txn8
(You'd obviously need to find something else to make the remainder, but something like this might be acceptable if you don't want to to a Trans-Pacific destination.)

Here's a $688 to Nairobi for that same weekend that earns 12600 PQM:
https://goo.gl/flights/2izY
(Would earn more but one of the LH-operated flights on the return does not count for PQM; make sure to check into the electronic visa application for Kenya if choose to do. With a day in NBO, could choose to go to Nairobi National Park, the giraffe center, or to see the baby elephants.)
