Based near SFO, I need 4,000 *A miles (in 2016) for 2K and was wondering whether there was some place I could fly to in Europe (any place really, though UK would be super nice) around the end of the year (from 12/24 through 12/31 for the outbound) and then return ideally on 1/1 (or ASAP thereafter), so that I can straddle the mileage yield over two qualifying years. Any return from the U.K. before the 5th puts the price over $1000. These are your best options, and you can experiment by changing the dates.

I don't see anywhere that you can go for $550 or less, straddling the new year, with 4000 miles in 2016, with a return in the first few days of 2017. Even SJU or BQN, typically good destinations for the mileage that you need, are over $800.

It will be cheaper if you can fly before the peak travel period, for example

Request is confusing. Can travel out of EWR Nov30-Dec04, but need to be on the west coast Nov30-Dec03? Seems you are asking for Nov30 outbound to west coast, Dec04 return to get to target mileage. If this is correct, then the destination is missing, so I will have to pick one out of the hat.

You can play around with dates/destinations to see what works best for you.

As the basic EWR-SFO roundtrip fare is $461, adding a hundred bucks or two isn't too bad. Others may be able to find better options.

With W-fare (or higher) on TPAC/TATL being necessary for GPU, best option may be HKG. I'm seeing $1117 ORD-HKG rt W-fare (1066PQD) on many dates. I haven't checked for positive R space, though. PVG/PEK are also possible, but require visa. All three require overnight.

Sorry for not being more specific, really need to leave for work now...

EDIT: been spending a few minutes during my lunch, having a rough time finding R-space to HKG. I do see some on SFO-PEK, but can't quite come up with a full itinerary right now.
