I think this also works:

UA:$397.91 BOS-ANC rt 9022PQM 4.4cpm 4PQS (possibly 5PQS?) GAA4AXES
Mon 12 Dec
UA339 BOS-DEN 0735-1022 B739
UA1126 DEN-ANC 1137-1534 B798
UA1104 ANC-(DEN)-IAH 2350-1152(+1 day) B738/A320
Tue 13 Dec
UA2407 IAH-BOS 1255-1738 B739

https://goo.gl/flights/Zc3J

Note: UA1104 makes a stop in DEN. Typically not counted as separate segments, but in this case there is an aircraft change (and therefore separate boarding passes), so they may count as two separate segments. No measurable increase in mileage, however.

8h in ANC in the middle of winter...something tells me staying in the airport is a good idea!

Thanks JBeckett! I should have been clear about looking for business. Segments to Asia aren't eligable for complimentary upgrades even if booked in Y, and I am old and tall. My status dropped and I don't have GPUs this year.

On one of the Google link, you change economy to business and change dates. The lowest fare is less than $1500. Good luck.

If you can get to HKG cheaply, HKG-SFO-SEA-SFO-HKG is $602 same day return 12/3. PVG and HGH also have some similar prices to the U.S.

Awesome! Thanks, jbeckett! I'll check these out.

Since that seemed like magic to me, is it possible to get the miles for even less money (as little as possible) if my dates are flexible (though weekends still preferred)?

You can leave on Christmas Day with W fare; EWR-SFO-HKG-GUM-HNL-DEN-EWR. This will give you 20,366 miles. You will probably need one GPU for the entire trip. GPU is likely cleared all way. However, your budget will not be met. The cost is $1471. If you like this itinerary and want a different day, remember that HKG-GUM operates on M, W and F only. Good luck.
